Friends had this bottle that had lost its stand, asked me for a replacement, super happy with the result. First time I've managed a proper glossy finish that I'm actually pleased with

Sanded up to 800, then sprayed with water to raise the grain, sanded back again up to 1200, then 3 coats of gloss poly sanding with 2000 in between

No idea if it's the "right" way to do it but it felt right in the moment 😆 was tricky to sand down in the gap between the arm & base though so those surfaces aren't quite as good, fortunately they're not really visible

It is my understanding that sanding wood beyond 220 grit or so is a burnishing rather than an abrading process, which does smooth the wood but makes it less absorbant, that may have helped the poly build up on the surface rather than soak in.
