There’s been a couple of minor dust-ups on mastodon about the conduct of so-called “big accounts” there that I do not care to comment on, but it has got me thinking — do we even have “big accounts” on the threadiverse (Lemmy/piefed/mbin)? I don’t think there’s any handle I’ve seen where I’ve been like “oh yeah, that person.” Am I just bad at remembering usernames, or does the community/thread style of discussion remove all continuity for a single account?

There's a handful of posters here that I definitely recognize. I don't know if I'd call any of them big accounts, though that may not be a bad thing.

[–] CombatWombatEsq@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Are they mostly people who are active in your favorite community or just people who you see around sometimes?

[–] mesamunefire@piefed.social 24 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

In my case both. Some people are 90% of the posts in the community but others are really healthy with more posters.

Reddit was like this once a decace ago. With much worse mod tools amd less transpatency.

I think there's a small handful of powerusers like LadyButterfly, Stamets, The_Picard_Maneuver, formerly FlyingSquid, etc, but they seem to me mostly non-problematic, mostly don't seem to overreach, and all seem to be actual people who actually interact and engage in discussions as members of their respective communities. I think some of them could post less or be more discerning in what they post, if it was up to me, but I understand that currently all of these type of users are interested in the growth of Lemmy and motivated to do their part to provide content, so I appreciate them vastly more than any critique I have of them. I am wary of the influence and soft power that can be accrued by powerusers, but as of right now I personally don't think it's a particular issue the community is currently facing.

But also I am not the most active or engaged community member, especially in the drama or social politics side of the fediverse, so the likelihood of blindspots in my view is high, I'll admit.

You don't recognise Satan's Maggoty Cum Fart?

I've been meaning to propose marriage to that mad lad, but I keep forgetting. Not a real marriage though, it's to tied down, more like a federated marriage where anyone can join and leave when they want and block out corporations they don't like.. maybe more of an aquantience rather.

PugJesus and The_Picard_Maneuver have already been named. The former basically single handedly keeping some history communities alive and the latter a lot of meme and Star Trek content.

For specific communities, @BallShapedMan@lemmy.world is a mainstay on !artshare@lemmy.world

@Agent_Karyo@piefed.world posts a lot of gaming content.

@MimicJar@lemmy.world is basically keeping !thesimpsons@lemmy.world in the feed signelhandedly.

I've wondered if I'm at fault for the decline in content on artshare. Do I share too often or too much?

Because of the thinning of that community I've started spreading out to Bluesky looking for a larger community. Mastadon is pretty thin and I find it hard to find a community there at all sadly.

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

No not at all. Power posters keep communities alive.

[–] BallShapedMan@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

I feel like I need a sword and a catch phrase, a corny one, like "I have the power!" to go with that title 😂😂😂

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You don't cross my feed that often, but you always get an upvote from me.

The_picard_maneuver I feel was a large reason there was even enough meme content to make it start feeling like a reddit replacement for me. I don't hate power users here since we need more posts to keep the fediverse content active. Maybe if we had 10k+ upvote posts in a single day it'd get old seeing the same faces, but if the content is good it's elevated. I'd only want something done about it if there were bots who follow-voted to achieve misleading numbers.

I think I'm on here too much because I was kind of surprised, my first reaction was "of course! People like stamets, ladybutterfly, silence7, PugJesus, The_Picard_Maneuver, etc..."

But I shouldn't really think of this as obvious, but more of a sign that I should be on here less lol

[–] steeznson@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Never mind these no name nobodies in the other comments. I have decided to grace this thread. Please continue to anoint me with rare fragrances and oils; fan me with large palm tree leaves, etc.

TotallyNotJessica in the transfem meme corner

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 15 points 2 days ago (19 children)

Plenty of accounts that I see commenting here regularly. Not "big accounts" per se but rather just people I seem to be running into constantly. This is such a small platform that it's pretty easy to get niche fame. That's why I'm on my 10th account.

the Kolanaki guy, that Chinese guy who keeps changing his name but has an ROC flag profile picture, LadyButterfly (she posts a lot in a community I moderate, very pleasant person). I think I've had my scrapings with Pugjesus and afraidofzombies, good to have discussion. There's also someone on here called "Satan's maggoty cum fart"

Oh and YappyMonotheist is one of my favourites. He's a very pleasant gentleman. There was a mormon guy here called Baldprophet, haven't seen him in ages

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Flying Squid was memorable but has been gone for a while. My understanding was they moved to a different country and haven't posted since.

My friend! ☺️👋

[–] PiraHxCx@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (4 children)

Well, there's no following here, there are just people who create posts way too often in too many communities, so you see them all the time - like cm0002, I also see a lot of Deceptichum and LadyButterfly but not as much as cm0002

[–] rimu@piefed.social 15 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Yes that is the crucial difference. Without followers determining your reach, every post earns it's upvotes on an equal footing with the others, regardless of author.

It's a much better system.

Follower-based networks like Mastodon and Twitter inevitably end up with a handful of people dominating the space because their posts get boosted which gets them more followers which gets them more boosts etc in a spiraling way. This attracts narcissists and drama queens.

Hey just FYI that word is an ableist slur that entered the popular lexicon through self-help scams after two thousand years of being used to villify queer people.

Wait. You guys look at posters' names?

Sometimes I feel like I spend too much time on this site, so I'm pretty glad to not see my name popping up in any of these comments, ha. Makes me feel less like a dingle with no life. (No offense intended to heavy posters, I'm just referring to how I feel about me. I wouldn't ever think someone else who posted a lot was a dingle with no life, because a lot of people's social lives happen online and that's okay.)

Oh. We exist.

You may need to be subbed to a relevant community (for me it's anime girls) to repeatedly see a given user to the point that you start recognizing them. I certainly have users I recognize.

You might know me for running the dailycomic bot that has continued the CnH posting after the original mod stopped doing it manually, or the !moomin@sopuli.xyz community.

But I know for a fact most people who'd recognize my handle, consider me "the anime girl poster". I use the same username in games, and have been asked "are you the MentalEdge from Lemmy" once, which was new.

From my perspective there are also people who comment often enough that I remember them.

There's the guy that posts a daily collection of screenshots from games he is playing, along with commentary on how he likes the games.

There's a couple big names over on lemmyshitpost.

Same goes for tenforward.

There's Blaze, who I know as a general background engine of activity and advocate for good on the fediverse.

There's a bunch more, but I'm not gonna bombard them with mentions.

There was FlyingSquid who was a "power user" and mod, posting seemingly 24 hours a day, but he seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. Apart from that the only users I recognize are the ones I typically have regular disagreements with over politics.
