Every year is the year of the linux desktop, it's growing and won't stop.
Until we reach 101%
it will never be 100%. there are people who use objectively superior oses (temple os)
I love the enthusiasm but I think we should honestly stop chasing "The Year Of The Linux Desktopβ’οΈ". I think it only serves as a depressant.
Let's just keep focusing on making Linux great for experienced and new users alike. π

Agreed. I've made the same argument myself, fully on board. I had my year of the Linux Desktop two decades ago. π
I just... As long as we don't actually take it seriously that "this might be the year of the Linux Desktop" and get disappointed that it isn't β by some unknown metric (seriously, what's even the definition of the "year of the Linux Desktop"?) β then it's fine. ππ

It has been for me since 2004. But yeah 2026 too.
I forgot where I read it, but someone said in the 1990s Sun's marketing was going on about "Year of Java", but ultimately nobody could tell what year the Year of Java actually was, because it just kinda happened. And given that in the 1990s the big push was for Java applets, which was a bit of a misadventure, you could argue that the Java breakthrough was ultimately something the marketing didn't focus on (full blown desktop apps, backend Web code). Sometimes in a way that the marketing didn't approve of (J2ME was kinda popular, but know what dwarfs it? Android. And that's not JVM and that makes Java marketing sad.)
So don't worry about the Year of the Linux Desktop. You won't even notice it. It'll happen.
My whole household is on linux. Several of my friends have switched. My mom is switching. Its happening.
I'm converting two older windows PCs to Linux as I type this!
