My favourite magic box is the MALDI. Matrix Assisted Lazer Desorption Ionizer. You mix matrix with bacteria from culture on a slide. The machine fires a lazer at the slide and breaks it into ions (charged particles). They're sucked up into a tube that measures mass/charge ratio by seeing how long it takes those particles to travel down a tube before they hit a detector (its mass spectrometry/time of flight). The signal it makes generates a fingerprint that is compared to a database... and it tells you exactly what bacteria you've isolated based on those fingerprints! Its the greatest invention known to man!

Be nice. Assume others have good intent (within reason).
Block or ignore posts, comments, and users that irritate you in some way rather than engaging. Report if they are actually breaking community rules.

Most 196 posts are memes, shitposts, cute images, or even just recent things that happened, etc. There is no real theme, but try to avoid posts that are very inflammatory, offensive, very low quality, or very "off topic".

Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
:O that's friggin amazing! Suddenly all my micro labs at uni are now silly.
Thats how I feel haha! I went to school for med lab so they teach us all about fun toys for histo, micro, heme, chem, and transfusion. Theres some really cool stuff out there!
The box where the magic actually happens is almost always black and kept in the corridor outside the labs.

The more I learn about biochemistry, the less it seems like black magic fuckery and more like a middle aged bloke with an angle grinder and a welder going at molecules until they look kinda right. NileRed's rubber glove hot sauce is partly to blame.
Oh come on! At least slap a lightening bolt or shooting star sticker on it!
Definitely nostalgic for the time PCs were beige rn
Yeah it's ugly af, but back then the machines fucking did what you told them
I mean, you could just install linux on your pc and your machine would do what you told it.
I did and it helps a lot, but it's not true for smartphones (i.e. a lot of people's main computing device) or even game consoles. Enshittification is everywhere and I feel like it gets harder and harder to avoid, especially when you consider laws that demand that you identify yourself with your personal ID to use social media or porn sites or want to install government spyware (e.g. EU's chat control or what China is doing in general) on your devices.
Same here! I actually really miss beige PCs where the operating system was simple and it wasn’t trying to do a bunch of bullshit behind your back, it was just sitting there waiting for you to use it!
I thk you just need some linux (and stern words), some beige powder coat and heat.
Welp. I'm off to paint my bedroom beige to make the magic happen!
Careful, you might summon laser beams! D:
No worries - I've got disco balls mounted everywhere to reflect those all around to dissuade my vict... er... companions from leaving.
Hey now, sometimes we have blue boxes where magic happens.

Do you also have my favorite, the machine that makes "ping" ?
The default sound effect on an Apple Computer Power Mac? It was also a beige box where the magic happened.
