You mean the Czech region Královec, right?

I grew up next to that border. Fortunately on the civilized side.

Which side?

Genuine question, no sass, from an opposite end of the earth.

Probably Poland or Lithuania.

Thinking of a Paradox game run where this will become (the only) Russia

I learned about this bit of territory like last year

[–] MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Somehow, Immanuel Kant managed to spend his entire life there (and he lived to a ripe old age of 80 years), and still became one of the most influential philosophers in modern history.

However, it was still part of Germany back then.

Somehow

Autism is how he did it. Seriously, look up his daily routines if you're intrigued

This little territory has lost like half a million people due to them invading Ukraine. Somehow.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 34 points 15 hours ago

And according to the Kremlin, it was a 3 day operation. Very efficient.

That’s where you put the army men before you do the war?

[–] ewigkaiwelo@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Can you cite that? According to the official statistics the population of the whole region is around 1 032 000 people now and has been around 1 029 000 in 2021, the stats are mirrored in wiki, russian only:

https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9D%D0%B0%D1%81%D0%B5%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B5_%D0%9A%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%B4%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%B9_%D0%BE%D0%B1%D0%BB%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B8

The official source is rosstat.gov.ru but my browser says that there is a potential security risk.

I know you've already received a woosh but the explanation is this: the post makes the joke that Kaliningrad is all that Russia is and in that context, Kaliningrad having managed to lose half a million citizens in a war with their neighbour that they don't even border is comical.

Of course, that is not the reality. Kaliningrad is a small exclave of Russia.

[–] ewigkaiwelo@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (2 children)

I understand the meme and honestly thought you were serious in your comment to the point where I was hoping it to be true and went to look if that was the case.

Also what's wooshing?

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana@piefed.world 5 points 7 hours ago

Wouldn't that be something. With a population of 1mil, losing half of it would be quite devastating. The "woosh" is a relic of a meme. The woosh is the sound the joke makes when it flies over your head and misses you.

Make Königsberg German again 😢

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 5 points 6 hours ago

i had a frustrating conversation recently about the ethnic cleansing of Königsburg to create kaliningrad. the person i was talking to kept saying that all the Germans had to be removed because they were nazis. the problem there is that this simply isn't true. the red army and the Free Deutschland movement cooperated on the liberation of the city from nazi control. after the collapse of nazi germany, the red army largely turned on their former Free Deutschland allies, only keeping the most staunchly authcomm officers around and relocating them to what would become East Germany.
