I'm not even sure I read everything on here because it was an overwhelming amount of information. Excellent representation, for me, at least.

In my case I made sure to read everything, but immediately forgot the previous item I read so went over the same ones a few times to make sure I covered everything.

Forgot substance abuse and suicide.

APD mentioned 🔥(i need hearing aids)

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Whoa whoa I never heard of apd before and it sounds like something I might have.

I hear things just fine...hearing test was good. But I tend to not "hear" things, if that makes sense.

Like sometimes people sound like they're talking jibberish/mumbled, or it takes a long time to register and I say "what" but I'm just buying time to respond.

There are hearing aids for that?

[–] zmrl@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

it takes a long time to register and I say "what" but I'm just buying time to respond.

This is how I realized I was experiencing APD when I learned about it. It helps explain some of the masking that I do.

Funny part is I play music and its not usually a problem and I play by ear a lot. Occasionally it does trip me up, but the better I get, the less of an issue that is.

well, technically i dont use hearing aids, but really theyre discreet bluetooth earphones that connect to my phone and ive set it so when they connect, the android Sound Amplifier app starts, and amplifies speech but not background noise. its a little awkward but it helps :3

[–] FoxyFerengi@startrek.website 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Does this amplify the things spoken to you or just audio you are listening to? I have a broader sensory processing disorder, and I've really become picky about the types of situations I'll go into because it takes such a huge toll. I think it would probably be easier to live with if I didn't have to concentrate so hard on separating conversations from ambient noise

[–] ollie@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago

it uses my phone microphone, and amplifies speech from what it ggets there, then sends it to the earphones. it kinda took a lot of fiddling with settings to get it to be able to generally pick out speech, and i have to hold my phone mic up to my friends like an interviewer if its very noisy, but my parents wont get me checked for it and hearing aids are expensive lol

Yes! Thank you! Separating conversation from ambient noise. That's a part I struggle with.

And my wife wonders why I can never hear her over the air conditioner/sink/etc.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

I think *freezes for 0.2 seconds* … I don't know, sorry.

^Maybe the topics outside of the iceberg itself are more like … typical or comon comorbidities?^

For me, it's mostly the "Go for broke" mentality. This is why I have a VERY hard stance on gambling. I can't have money on the table for anything.

TIL being a stoner is very aligned with adhd.

[–] stray@pawb.social 3 points 1 day ago

The people I know who are for sure diagnosed with ADHD are very focused and productive when just a little bit stoned.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago

Yes esp. when intoxicated
