Yeah got a lot of flak for "watching TV" when I was a kid, it was like murder or yaking drugs or something. I didn't even watch tv almost at allπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Today: both genitors are glued to their tv or their phone.

that was video games for me and my siblings and peers, while most of the parents watched tv from the moment they got home and through dinner, and sometimes we would have to go to bed early if they wanted to watch something not child friendly.

Can we please go back to the emo/hipster/scene era look for women? I know people hated it but I didn't.

sigh if you wanna do it right, gotta do it yourself

I saw a real live 2005 emo at the grocery store the other day. It was wild.

(I actually saw teens walking around with Scene gear and it aged me 20 years in a second πŸ’€)

I can get on board for all this "you have become what you hated" fun poking.

But let's be real. And I won't be alone in this because Lemmy is loaded with tech folks who probably spent a lot of time sitting at a desktop computer in their younger years. I submit the following:

My parents staring at facebook on their phone all evening is an objectively worse activity than teens/20s me sitting at a desktop computer doing 20 different things all evening. One just might turn you into a software engineer or IT professional and the other just might turn you into a drooling nazi.

Yep. I've never seen anything good come of scrolling TikTok.

Playing TF2 on a shitty computer forced me to get creative, squeeze every last drop of performance out of my system.

Playing Gmod taught me programming, maths, and introduced me to a lot of friends.

I think it's stupid when we say that "brainrot" is new. we always had it. but the amount and availability is out of proportion.

I'm 2000s we got some random badges viral video once a month or two. now? you can enjoy non stop brainrot slop 24/7.

in 2000s I learned so much from the internet, between slop there was so much good stuff. now? I don't realise I spent 6 hours scrolling and learned absolutely nothing.

You know what the crazy thing is? My mother is fully capable of recognizing the AI videos (uncannily so, actually, she always passes those "AI or Real" tests with flying colours compared to the rest of us). She just doesn't care.
