Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

Can we ban rawstory links? Every single one is sensationalized crap.

[–] wabasso@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

I clicked through and half the lines were underlined, half the page height is ads. I don’t know how to read raw internet anymore.

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 36 points 2 days ago (3 children)

See, the thing is, I watch piss porn. Hear me out. I told my friend that the thing is, to do piss porn, you kind of have to be into it. You could try and fake it, but it wouldn't be very convincing. So, my contention is, piss porn is more genuine than other types of porn, because the people partaking are statistically more likely to enjoy doing that type of porn. Which is great, I think, because then they really get into it, which is hot. It's that enjoyment that gets me off. Their enjoyment.

She said, "Krooklochurm, you're an idiot. Anyone can fake liking getting pissed in the face."

So I said, "Well, if you're so adamant, get in the tub and I'll piss in your mouth, and let's see if it's as easy as you claim."

So she said, "All right. If I can fist you in the ass afterwards."

Which I felt was a fair deal, so I took it.

My (formal) position was strengthened significantly by the former event. And I can also attest that I could not convincingly fake enjoying being ass-fisted.

What does that have to do with anything, you ask? Genuinity. The real deal. That's what.

[–] Arioxel@jlai.lu 44 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I feel like I've been tricked to read that

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

I read it yesterday, so I was fortunate to be able to skip most of it after the first few words.

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Eat the pasta. Mmmmm delicious copypasta.

[–] Machinist@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Is this the first organic lemmypasta?

I was there and witnessed the orginal.

[–] coriza@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I didn't see it, by chance would you have the link to the original?

[–] Machinist@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Sorry, I don't. I looked and can't find it.

[–] VinnyDaCat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It might be, but it was posted a couple of days ago as well apparently.

[–] Machinist@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yup, I was referring to seeing the original post the other day.

On second thought, the fediverse girl one is probably the true first copypasta.

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I was there!

Hello future robot overlord historians 👋

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Praise the coming morn

his latest move could kill us all

This phrase could literally have been said at any point during Trump's current term, and it will continue to be true for the rest of his term. Trump is regularly doing things that could kill us all.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I honestly think that just the damage that's been done to climate change initiatives might be enough. We had a ton of steam going in to 2025, and this year has set us back by decades. I'm afraid that having such a prominent producer of GHG and pollution pull away so sharply will have knock on effects to other countries. After all, if the US doesn't play ball, why should a smaller industrial country try to be cleaner?

Hopefully there's still willpower and (more importantly) time to fix our shit before people start dying en masse. I kind of have my doubts at this point though. I'm pretty sure we will only start to truly prioritize it once it has a large impact on daily life, and that point will be far too late.

You elected an imbecile, twice.

That says so much more about the American voters than it will ever about Trump or anyone in his admin.

[–] Aljernon@lemmy.today 33 points 2 days ago (5 children)

“Now, there's one thing you might have noticed I don't complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky. They don't pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It's what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're going to get selfish, ignorant leaders." -George Carlin

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Valid points, with love to George. But there's a bit missing from that pithy take. The reasons you don't see enough "good politicians" are the same systemic reasons we say "all cops are bastards".

The carrots and sticks in the system are all lined up to weed out a certain kind of person, and to give another kind as much help as they need. The carrots I'm thinking of are campaign finance and the sticks are corporate media.

The American political system loves people who are cynical mercenaries, vituperative demogoues, or any alloy of those traits flexible enough to find a lasting niche. The exceptions prove the rule, to my mind.

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

The only other time I've seen the word "pithy" was on the old cracked.com.

I suppose it would make sense when discussing fruit, as well.

Additionally, I looked up the word "pith" to make sure I wasn't being dumb and I learned it refers to the spinal cord! I've recently suffered a spinal injury, so that's useful information.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from?

The Ivy League mostly, with honorable mention to Stanford, MIT, and the bigger state Universities.

But also, they tend to come from the nation's wealthiest families, or as personal friends and social relations of these ultra-wealthy elites.

they are elected by American citizens

We had a 44 year run during which a Bush or a Clinton was a leading contender for President (1976 - 2020). What do you do when your options are so limited? Hell, guys like Trump and Biden are the outliers.

Get down to the state and local levels, and you'll see much the same. Perennial incumbents from entrenched social circles cement themselves into power and promote their cronies to surrounding offices. Down in Texas, you can point to the tight-knit social circle of former Bush-Era cronies running the state as their own private fief. Opponents are subject to a litany of subversive tactics, ranging from vigilante harassment to criminal prosecution. Voting participation is deliberately suppressed through both legal and illegal means. And misinformation runs rampant in a press owned and operated by outspoken fascists.

To say people are just picking its leadership on perceived merits is plainly false.

You elected an imbecile, twice.

Idk what you're talking about. I voted for Joe Biden.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

So then you only elected the imbecile once

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If the rest of the world doesn't learn from our example I'm gonna be very disappointed. Your government needs real checks and balances, actual power in the hands of citizens rather than billionaires.

[–] reptar@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Your government needs real checks and balances

For real. We (USA) thought we did. We don't.

Rest of the world here: WE FUCKING WARNED YOU, YOU MORONS!!!!

[–] avg@lemmy.zip 41 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hardly, half of the world is currently considering electing just as moronic representatives.

[–] AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Seriously. Everybody seems to be very eager to make our same mistake. It's almost like there's some kind of global disinformation campaign or something aimed at undermining democracy and installing ultra right wing leaders....

Well, goodnight.

[–] Diurnambule@jlai.lu 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I smetime wonder if the that brexit was a proof of concept. Peoples massively votes against their own interests.

After learning what the shadowy forces of the U.S. and U.K. did to Australia back in the 70s I'm not sure I would be surprised to learn it wasn't unrelated.

[–] blattrules@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago

American here: I warned them too, but they’re too stupid to listen to reason…and facts…and science.

What’s this “we” assertion bullshit?

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Funny how when it's Russia, every Russian must suffer for not overthrowing Putin, but when it's the US, suddenly “oh no, it wasn't me”.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 33 points 2 days ago (9 children)

Unfortunately I don't believe it was. Go on Next door some time and you'll see why.

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

not sure what state you’re in but:
a) russian trolls can post on next door too.
b) election truth alliance

Tl;dr - Trump ruining environment and economy for the whole world, not just the US.

Didn't see any new stuff besides some stuff from Newsom and the Pope about how it's probably wrong to let people die and poison the planet.

Holy mother of ads! I tryed to read anything twice. To all website owners, if you plan on selling something to me my suggestion is to let my phone load the page. Test with an old phone. If it doesn't work, go back to the drawing board. Maybe you don't need that malware 8K ad movie for each button. Maybe.
