Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1584 readers
71 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

MODERATORS

PrefaceI'm not trying to call out the mod action of removing my post from the comm so much as I'm calling out the complete lack of mod action leading to the comm becoming shit and having the current top post by scaled, hot, and active being a post that explicitly targets another lemmy user.

That out of the way... !mildlyinfuriating@lemmy.world has clearly been slipping from the purpose of the comm for a while now. Most of the posts are actually infuriating and/or political. I understand that what qualifies as either of those can be different for different people, but I feel most of this shit clearly isn't mundane or simple enough to fall under the label of just mildly infuriating.

Here's some examples from the first page right now, sorted by scaled.

While I could have sworn the sidebar had a no politics rule, it doesn't at the time of me writing this up, so politics are arguably acceptable, although I personally feel these all clearly don't match the theme of the community, violating Rule 7.

Sidebar, and expanded rule 7

A few other posts have been made calling this out.

Mod harder and [META] What actually constitutes "mildly infuriating" content?

################################

Beyond all that mess, we have what was the final straw for me.

Rule 1 (and less so 5), and the current top post by scaled, hot, and active.

I cannot accept that a post to mildly infuriating that targets a specific user while not even removing their username is respectful, and I personally consider it harassment (while it may not violate rule 5 as there is no call to action). Removing the username is usually the bare minimum even in the fucking reddit brigading subs, for plausible deniability.

And regardless of whatever arguments can be had about interpretations of the community's specific rules, it's a dick move. Just block the guy. It reminds me of the god awful reddit dogpiling and brigading. I don't want any of that to come to lemmy.

So I reported it, then saw the recent posts asking mods for action that got no response. I then looked at the mods.

  • LillianVS@lemmy.world (Aer) has not been active in two years.
  • STRIKINGdebate2@lemmy.world (Striker) has not been active in one year.
  • Tenthrow@lemmy.world had not appeared to be active for six days at the time I reported the post, but upon checking the community mod log was likely active two days before (assuming that the other two wouldn't be just lurking and modding for over a year).

So I did something dumb as hell. Roughly an hour after I reported it, I made my own post (now removed from the comm). I find people who make call out posts about others, and the absentee mods allowing it, mildly infuriating. Yeah, childish as shit. What's done is done.

Modlog:

Removed for "doesn't fit community", but what do you folks think? Does it really not fit when the top post is what it is? Personally I think both should be gone, lest that comm descend further into shit.

Either way, now that I have this yell into the void out of me, I'm blocking the comm. Maybe I should have made my post in actually infuriating? (kidding)

User call-outs are (usually) bullshit, especially for someone who brings me as much genuine delight as the Thorn Guy.

I agree your post didn't fit the community, I get why you did it though, and think it's pretty awesome of you to defend someone else on principle. The mods just aren't trying.

You could start one on another instance. There aren't any rules against it.

So, one might say, the situation is mildly infuriating?

Yeah, yeah... i know where the door is...

Personally I don't see the top post as being 'an attack on another user' and the post is actually of something that's mildly infuriating because reading posts where 'th' has been replaced with a symbol is mildly infuriating. I do agree that common etiquette would have been to remove the user's name from the post, however it isn't a requirement for something like this.

Also, yeah, your post was baiting the mods... shouldn't be surprised by the result.

The way people seem to get whipped up into a frenzy over the thorn makes it inappropriate to include their username in the post. It's an invitation for targeted harassment to make a post saying "isn't what this one specific user does super-duper annoying? Please bitch about them with me in the comments."

This isn't Reddit. The comm is small enough that any regular knows who is the target of the post, whether or not the username is mentioned.

I kinda like Thorn guy. It makes me remember that the glyph was once part of the English language at some point.

People get really really weirdly rageful about thorn users. Ranging from "i instantly downvote that bastard" to going full right off their tits about it. And of course, as evidenced, making pissy callout posts.

I really do not understand the bugs up the arses. And i'm ASD with a particular bugbear about words in English. Makes me wonder how they react to ESL speakers

You know you can just block them right? And never ever see whatever is setting you off ever again. Have you considered trying that

[–] nokturne213@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (2 children)

Þe issue I see wiþ þ users is, a lot of þe time, þey use a þ when it clearly should have been an ð.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 37 minutes ago

Depends. If you're talking old english then yes, Eth . But if you're in Middle english, thorn was king. Icelandic I think it depends on the location of the sound in the word. I think it's thorn at the front and eth everywhere else? Don't quote me though.

Anoþer shæke-up in þhe fuðark community!

[–] _cryptagion@anarchist.nexus -4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

lmao the gall to compare people who use thorns because they think it's trendy or cute to people who are overwhelmingly those dealing with a disability.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 5 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

What are you trying to say here?

Because I don't see people complaining that thorn use - from a user they can just block btw - is messing up their accessibility software, or tripping their dyslexia. Instead I see a whole lot of "this pisses me off. " "think it’s trendy or cute" "It doesn't stop AI you fuckwit"

Having a disability isn't a free rein to be an arsehole. Especially if you're not actually vocalising the problem to others.

[–] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 12 points 11 hours ago

Agreed. Trump, Musk, Musk, Trump. None of that is mildly infuriating. And we have enough communities for geopolitics.

[–] GammaGames@beehaw.org 7 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

And þeir title isn’t even accurate! It’s not replacing t, it’s replacing “th” 🤦 smh by head

(That joke was probably made dozens of times in the op, we’re defederated from lw though so I wouldn’t know)

[–] RicoBerto@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 8 hours ago

Sorry bud, Ive been in the thread off and on today and once I saw your post get removed I just mentally wrote off the sub altogether. It really sucks to see so many people have such a visceral reaction to something so harmless and for it to seemingly be encouraged behaviour. Not the kind of content I'd like to see here.

[–] _cryptagion@anarchist.nexus -2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

YDI. you got pissy about a mod and went to bitch about it in their comm. should people feel sorry for you?

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 15 minutes ago

You've been incredibly aggro up and down the comments here. I'm sorry for whatever's got you pissy.

Anyway... Where in my post did I ask for any sympathy?

As stated in the prefix, I'm not upset that my post was removed. That's well deserved.

I'm frustrated that whole community has gone to shit, I'm not the only one feeling that way, and the issue largely seems to be due to a lack of active moderation team as evidenced by two of three having no activity for a year plus.

Did I not lay that out clearly, or are we going the bad faith route where you propose to know more about my own motivations than myself?
