Democrats say that’s a nonstarter, arguing there are already limits on abortion access. The dispute could torpedo a deal, leading to higher health insurance premiums for millions.

Senate Republicans say they’re open to extending a pot of Affordable Care Act funds that will expire at the end of the year — but only if Democrats acquiesce to stricter abortion restrictions on insurance plans.

The demand presents a significant hurdle to reaching a bipartisan deal to extend ACA funding designed to avoid major premium hikes next year for more than 20 million Americans, as Democrats are adamant that existing abortion guardrails under Obamacare are sufficient.

If the funds are not extended by the end of the year, some people insured under Obamacare could see their bills rise by thousands of dollars per month, raising concerns that millions will choose to go uninsured.

But hey, at least we preserved the filibuster.

Sidenote - can we stop calling it "caving"? Caving implies they gave in to pressure, but there was no pressure. They were in a better position than ever. Even "surrender" feels wrong. This was a betrayal, and a non-zero number of people are going to die due to losing their health care. These senators have blood on their hands.

[–] PoorYorick@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Exactly, this was neither caving, nor capitulation. It was calculated cowardice specifically designed to disenfranchise voters after they dared to vote for Mamdani.

This was a move planned and executed by Schumer meant to undercut the possibility of a progressive wave that might actually function as an opposition party. The pure and simple fact is that the establishment Dems are controlled. They helped Mike Johnson retain speaker of the house, they helped pass the "big beautiful" and now they are actively helping to remove healthcare access. They will continue to support fascism over progress.

Well said, this was first and foremost a targeted anti-solidarity action meant to divide democrats and spear progressive hope in the heart, it makes no sense otherwise.

The filibuster would've stayed anyway, there's no way the republican senators were giving that up at this stage yet. Unlike the annoying orange, they will have to continue on for longer and will face the problems of getting rid of it and being a minority themselves at some point (hopefully). Most of the republican senators spoke out in support of it a week ago.

There was pressure in a way, in the form of all the government workers suffering from the shutdown. And we know that Dems give at least a tiny bit of a shit about them whereas the other side does not.

Still fucking cowards though.

If only the Democrats had leverage

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 22 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

"Whoops we just gave the leverage away for nothing!"

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

If only the Democrats ~~had leverage~~ weren't controlled opposition

[–] Jumbie@lemmy.zip 23 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

There it is. The stupidity fucking democrats NEVER learn. Stop negotiating with (political) terrorists, especially when you have the advantage.

[–] coyootje@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

No but surely this time they'll be reasonable, right guys? Let's give them everything they want in good faith one more time, I'm sure it'll be alright this time. At thjs point the dems are fully complicit to whatever this government does imo.

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No, fuck that shit. Let the subsidies expire. People will cancel their coverage. Let the health care system implode under the weight. Stop giving the fascists what they want. Fucking disgusting. I was born into this country with the right to have an abortion. A right I had to avail myself of because I was raped by my step-father at the age of 12. Being forced to carry that child would have destroyed me emotionally and physically.

[–] rothaine@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Let the health care system implode under the weight. Stop giving the fascists what they want.

I think that is what they want though? Health care imploding sounds like a fast track to a full-blown depression, which means Peter Thiel and his buddies can buy up land for cheap. Their stated goal is to form their own corporate city-states. Like ye olde company towns, but with more surveillance and less rights.

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I agree with you. I dunno, but it seems that the average American, especially in red states, need to experience more misery before they turn on the fascist GOP.

[–] rothaine@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not sure they will. The rightwing propaganda machine will blame it on Democrats/immigrants/trans people somehow.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I agree. These dumbasses are even still parroting lines from the Confederates about how they inherited the worst economy ever from Biden which is just bullshit. But many of them are even still buying nonsense from the GOP about the economy and they sure as hell will buy it about health care, too.

[–] BigMacHole@sopuli.xyz 13 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Don't WORRY! They'll Hold Out until Americans have ALREADY Paid their first MULTI THOUSAND DOLLAR MONTHLY PREMIUM and Then make a Decision to End Abortion in a Standalone bill once Rich People's PROFITS start decreasing!

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

So then... Have unwanted kids you can't afford because of our dogshit wealth distribution, it else we'll take away healthcare subsidies, so that you, and the other people we forced to have kids will die. Oh, and the kids to.

I don't know if there's a more succinct summary of the Republican platform...

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 8 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, we already knew that, ffs they tried to slip a backdoor nationwide ban into their proposal last week. I am so sick of their shit ...

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Starve children and the elderly for political gain.

Oppress women for political gain.

Welcome to conservative America.

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Democracy in the United States no longer exists.

We just watched the party that ran on "preserving democracy" give power back to a literal authoritarian regime for nothing in return.

Kill the Duopoly, it's the only way we make it through this.

[–] 52fighters@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 2 weeks ago

to;dr: Republicans don't want government money subsidizing insurance policies that pay for abortions.
