The Master System didn't have a lot of great games, but man, Phantasy Star made up for any other deficiencies it had.

Hands down one of the best RPGs for ANY system, 8 bit, 16 bit or otherwise. Complete with full 3D dungeons.

I got the retrofreak with the master system attachment a few months ago. I'm looking online for a copy of Phantasy Star as we speak! I was a huge fan of PSO (only the first one, the sequel feels like a cheap enshittified knockoff), so I've always wanted to know more about its original games.

Totally! I got PS for Christmas and I was not really into it. I liked arcade action games. It must have sat around for like 6 months and then I gave it a Saturday morning try and I was hooked. It's a great game.

My first system. My confusion about it not getting a Nintendo quickly evaporated playing Hang-On, Outrun and Space Harrier (at home!) Such a cool piece of hardware. I remember being bummed by the lack of selection in stores, but still have a stack of bangers. I need to re-cap it…

Sega was such an arcade beast back then.

I enjoyed the article but the thing that is most remarkable to me is that you have the courage to use 12 em-dashes and 2 bullet-point lists in an article in 2025.
