Police pleaded with the public not to rush to any conclusions as they and Boone County prosecutors try to determine if a crime was committed.

If a crime was committed... Clearly a woman with keys in her hand was such an immediate threat that the homeowner had no other choice than to execute her.

"We understand that incidents like this can cause concern and speculation," police said. "We respectfully ask the public to place their trust in the investigative process...

Fuck off. Reasonable people have long since learned that the investigative process in places like this is an absolute joke. I trust that the police will find a way to claim that this was justified or they will bungle the investigation so badly that they shooter will get off anyway. Why do I think this? Here's a hint: Whitestown.

It's really a coin toss between the shooter is a half-feral MAGA twat who finally got his wish to be able to shoot a brown person and that the shooter is a half-feral MAGA twat who was cowering in their home so afraid of the world outside that he felt that he had no recourse but to execute a woman who walked up to the wrong house.

We recently had a case here in Ocala, Florida, where a bunch of black kids were playing in their yard. They had an old white lady neighbor who hated them, and was constantly calling the cops on them.

On that day, she went to the yard, picked up a roller skate that was laying off to the side, and threw it at the kids. Then she picked up an expensive iPad that a kid had laid down, and went into her house with it.

The kids told their mother, and she went next door, with her kids along, to deal with this neighbor - again. This time, the neighbor shot through the door at chest height, and killed the mother dead, right in front of her 4 children.

Turns out she had been Googling Stand Your Ground laws, and was prepared for exactly this situation, probably even engineered it, knowing that taking the iPad would bring the mother to the front door.

As a notorious racist, who had threatened and tormented her neighbors relentlessly, and clearly planned this murder, everybody immediately dismissed her self-defense position, and she was sentenced to 25 years in prison, where she will likely die.

Oh yeah there’s a doc on Netflix about that showing all the police bodycam footage. It was a good doc but so sad :(

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 20 points 4 months ago (1 children)

My mom told me about the doc, and I had to tell her that it happened near us.

I haven't watched the doc, but I followed the story closely, and I don't think I want to wallow in it any more. It's just too sad.

[–] PrincessLeiasCat@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 months ago

Yeah, totally makes sense. I wouldn’t want to revisit it either. :(

everybody immediately dismissed her self-defense position, and she was sentenced to 25 years in prison, where she will likely die.

This is surprising.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 25 points 4 months ago (1 children)

A bit, yeah, especially in MAGA friendly Ocala. Even if the prosecutor wanted to show some leniency, the old bitch's past behavior precluded that. It was extremely clear that she planned and committed this murder, leaving 4 young kids without a mother. Even MAGAs couldn't deny that.

[–] CH3DD4R_G0BL1N@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 months ago

Even MAGAs couldn't deny that.

A world first. Truly shocking

[–] Chip_Rat@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

It's a woman (who was violent) remember. There is always a hierarchy, and given how blatant this was, it was probably easier to let her hang than to defend her. Save the MAGA energy for a good old boy.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago

holy fuck.

what is wrong with people.

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

At least the story had a somewhat happy ending. I feel terrible for the kids, even though they got justice in the end.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 24 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Happy ending? I don't know if I'd call it that. It's definitely justice, but often justice isn't happy, and is OFTEN unsatisfying. This is a perfect example.

Hopefully they can sue her, and take whatever little the killer had. It's not like she's going to need it, and if she ever gets out of prison, she'll re-enter society homeless and penniless.

There is some satisfaction in that, but those kids would almost certainly prefer their mother back.

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Yeah, that murderer should be paying child support for the rest of her life, and the kids should inherit everything she owns when she croaks, because she deprived those children of a mother who would have done those things for her.

Every time I hear about Ocala, FL I remember the time that a Florida judge tossed their case suing Lexington, KY. Someone down there copywrited or trademarked "The Thoroubred Capital of The World," in the early '00s and then tried to sue Lexington, KY for the title. Your own judge basically told the plaintiff, not just no, fuck no.

“Whitesville”

“Heritage Subdivision”

🤔

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 31 points 4 months ago

Even more on the nose when you notice it's across the interstate from Brownsburg

Whitesville was a sundown town and the hate and racism are still going strong

They have no duty to retreat, that's in the law. That person who uses that force has to reasonably believe that the force is necessary to prevent or terminate an unlawful entry or attack on the person's dwelling."

Ok "sure" thats the law but The home owners life was not threatened or attacked. Unlawful entry would have been prevented when the keys she was given didnt work. I would also argue telling someone to fuck off i got a gun is required before he can **reasonable believe ** additional force is necessary. You cant justify shooting someone in the head without warning in this situation.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 40 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Sorry, but in many red states people who murder for just walking across their yard are never charged.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

Literally nobody said or suggested that.

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

No, but that's the reality of living in America

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 20 points 4 months ago

The guy who prompted the passage of this law is getting filthy rich off the kid he murdered by signing Skittles packs, net worth now about 800mn.

If its Hispanic you win. Ill also accept minority.

[–] comeonitsnotlike@feddit.nu 16 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I'm a winner! (is it bonus points if the murderer was a white, scared to death of everything, old man..? cause if, I'm getting those too)

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

Ooh, you are correct, but unfortunately no bonus points for that one. It was the free space due to the town being named "Whitesville"
