Exclusive poll: Inflation remains a concern despite president’s pledge to reduce prices on ‘day one’

Nine months after Donald Trump took office, promising to reduce prices on “day one”, a clear majority of Americans say their monthly costs have risen by between $100 and $749, according to an exclusive new poll conducted for the Guardian.

The president has continued to insist that there is “virtually no inflation”. “Prices are ‘WAY DOWN’ in the USA,” Trump wrote on social media in late August.

Yet according to a new Harris poll, Americans are still reporting soaring inflation and are increasingly pessimistic about the economy.

Prices will probably continue to go up a while yet.
A recent study claimed consumers currently pay only half the increased tariffs, and companies will obviously work on normalizing their profits, meaning that other half will also have to be paid.
Also the US dollar has been weak for 5 months now, that means that some goods are worth more on export markets than at home.
The American purchasing power is decreasing from a global perspective, making USA less interesting as an export market, and exports from USA more profitable.
This means there is very little downward pressure on prices, even as Americans are getting poorer and can afford less.

An article about It was on here just a couple of days ago. I'm sorry I don't have the link.

But a simple search turned this story up:
https://www.nbcnews.com/business/consumer/us-consumers-bearing-half-cost-tariffs-far-goldman-sachs-says-rcna237283

It says 55% so not quite the same, maybe not the same study IDK?

I think prices will continue to go up nearly forever. That's kinda how inflation works. Deflation is rare and usually a bad sign.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Inflation is normal, what we typically call inflation is when it's above the normal rate. The target rate by most national banks is 2% inflation.

That's the job of journalism: to report facts. But who thought it could be such a tedious job?

  • President says hamburgers cost $1
  • In reality, they cost $5.99

Investigative reporting = reading pricetags

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago

Someone's got to do it. Unless you shop repetively for specific items, its really hard to tell what's inflation vs. non sales weeks, marketing gimmicks and etc.

[–] Frozengyro@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Go to a sit down spot, burgers are 12-25 bucks depending on the place.

[–] kay4749@lemmings.world 0 points 1 month ago

Yeah, they keep charging what people are willing to pay.

[–] Xanthobilly@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] kay4749@lemmings.world 0 points 1 month ago

Eh, they're cheaper if you go to McDonald's. Some of them, anyways. Still not worth the price.

If you're going to a burger joint, you're going to be taken for a ride so they can pay their landlords, subscriptions, and still have money left over to get ripped off themselves at other restaurants.

“I was told there would be no fact checking!”

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 33 points 1 month ago (3 children)

And what are American's going to do about it?

Nothing but vote for Republicans that caused it in the first place.

[–] Mihies@programming.dev 15 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Whoa, isn't Biden the responsible? /s

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I mean, Biden is definitely responsible for running a stupid af campaign as a wayyyyy too old candidate and then falling apart at the worst moment...? Doesn't make him the one that is doing the evilest things, it doesn't make him as shitty as Republicans and Trump, but yeah, I do find Biden responsible in a lot of ways?

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 2 points 1 month ago

I mean, he is for not cracking down on price gouging. Then Trump came and made the crisis worde with his tariff nonsense.

[–] d00phy@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

Why would they vote for Democrats when “Republicans are better for the economy” (says every poll since forever proving that Americans have no fucking clue what is “good for the economy”)?

[–] kay4749@lemmings.world 0 points 1 month ago

Don't pretend neo-liberals care about this, either.

[–] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Earlier this week I had to go back to my expenses/shopping records from last year and while I was there I decided to spend a few minutes comparing costs. I obviously knew shit is more expensive than in 2024, but I was still a bit surprised at just how much stuff has gone up.

And, yes it sucked when this happened in the covid years under the Biden administration, but at least then it was a worldwide phenomenon and there were logical reasons for it. This time around it's happening due to pure incompetence if not outright malice.

But also, why is fucking hot sauce up 20%? Coffee 50%? Hamburger almost double? I mean I'm glad the 5 gallon buckets I bought last year are down 10%, but those don't really put a dent in my weekly budget.

[–] capital_sniff@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago

Something like over half the price increases are because the businesses are able to raise prices and consumers still buy. So high prices are in large part due to greed. The rest I assume are increased input costs and costs of doing business.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The other 25% are deranged and dangerous.

They will report positively in their delicious denial

[–] BlueLineBae@midwest.social 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Tariffs and inflation are only half the problem in my opinion. For some items, prices have increased and continue to increase for those 2 reasons. But there's a hell of a lot of items made right here on US soil that have increased far more than they should have. It's the egg bullshit all over again. Companies are using inflation and tariffs as an excuse to increase prices as high as possible. You know how I know that eggs or granola shouldn't cost $10? Because fresh local farm eggs cost $4.50 after they increased their price due to the cost of feed increasing. And I personally started making homemade granola and know that it doesn't cost nearly $10 per 16oz for the raw materials. Bunch of greedy fucks making a bad situation worse.

[–] d00phy@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

If only there were some sort of regulating agency that could investigate and punish businesses for price gouging. Someone should really look into that.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 month ago

Inflation is over .... for the super rich.

Who else would they be thinking about?

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 month ago

If Trump says it's over, it's over. Didn't you read hit MAGA cap? Diaper Donny was right about everything. If you can't pay your bills and groceries, it's your own fault. Trump did everything in his power to help rich people. If you're not rich, it's your fault. Next time, be rich instead of being poor. Just some advice. It's super simple. Can't buy a house? Just make sure you have a house to sell first, then you can buy a new house no problem. Think in solutions, not in poverty.

What a fucking dystopia we live in.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Inflation is over! Everything computer! Being broke, hungry, sick, misinformed, and unemployed is good for the economy. Thank you for your attention to this matter! 🫲🍊🫱

[–] blankwire@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Just remember: Nothing bad can happen, it can only good happen.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's nice to see the "the economy is great for billionaires! Why are you complaining that you can't afford groceries?" crowd come around to the idea that lying about the economy to people who are struggling isn't a good thing.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 2 points 1 month ago

For now, anyway.

2 lbs of red grapes and a box of brownie mix: $25

[–] kay4749@lemmings.world 4 points 1 month ago

Where?

I just checked walmart.com and 2.25 pounds of grapes ranges in price from $3.92 to $4.21 depending on the type.

The most expensive brownie mix is $3.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Yeah its over. OverDONE
