i3 is a fantastic WM for beginners who don't want to do legit programming, like to those of Xmonad (Haskell), AWM (Lua), or BSPWM (usually BASH, but any language works). That's what Neigsendoig (my producer) and I started WM use with, and we stayed with it ever since.

Ghostty we heard was good, and we used it a bit. However, we stuck to Alacritty, since it used TOML instead of Lua.

Looks great. Kind of looks like the type of OS that they would make up for a movie about hackers. :D

Do you use i3 exclusively? Or do you have a more typical desktop environment for web browsing and such? And, if it's the former, how do you like it?

Well I can still switch to cinnemon if needed, but im currently using i3 exclusively. For work, browsing the web, making music and play games once in a while.

It works great in i3 so I'm liking it so far. If linux Mint 22.3/23 has full Wayland support I might replace it with an Wayland alternative.

I never used Tiling Window Managers before, I started to like them like 2/3 weeks ago. (using linux since 2 years now). I was experimenting with cortile but that wasn't a good solution due to several bugs/instabilities. I3 seams to be one of the easier ones to customize, so I ended up using that instead.

If you want to reaplce i3 with a Wayland alternative, you could still get the i3 experience with Sway, SwayFX, or MiracleWM. I'm sure that'd be quite fine.

Thanks, that's good to know. I've been curious about going with a tiling window manager for a while now.

This looks quite nice.

I had to look up ricing. From ai:

Ricing Linux refers to the process of customizing the appearance and functionality of a Linux operating system, often by modifying themes, icons, and window managers to create a unique desktop environment.

I've only ever known "ricing" as a semi-racist term for people with no money who got inspired by the early Fast and Furious movies in the 2000s; stuck a bunch of cheap junk on their Asian commuter cars like fiberglass body kits and fake turbos, in an attempt to make them look fast and sporty.

Ricing out your car isn't as popular as it used to be in the 2000s, but I still see the occasional Toyota Tercel with a giant fake carbon fiber wing and fart can exhaust sputtering down the road. Underglow seems to be making a big comeback too.

identifies term as racist
uses term anyway

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 1 points 3 months ago

Yes thats how language works? The word isnt racist outside the racist context.

[–] this_1_is_mine@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Semi being not applied to any race specifically. As in Any one can rice out a Honda Civic.

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca -2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Ah yes
The rice fields
No racial associations at all

[–] this_1_is_mine@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Done by quite literally every nationality.

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Yeah I'd never heard the term about computers, let alone Linux specifically, in my life until today and it's everywhere.

[–] Darohan@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

It used to be a lot more common, especially over on r/unixporn, but it has racist connotations so it has fallen out of favour in the last 5-10 years.
