RG Gundam Epyon (with decals)

I finally finished putting the decals on my RG Gundam Epyon. Even with the matte top coat I've flaked off two of them, but I'm still happy with the result. I love this kit.

RG Epyon is a great RG kit and certainly underrated. I see online shops trying to get rid of them for 30% off or more periodically. The only thing to be wary of that I can remember when building it, is it has quite a few very small pieces.

Not sure if the bridge is working, so here's my quoted comment:

@wirelesswire@lemmy.zip Yeah I lost one of those very small pieces for a few hours. Fantastic kit. I would have been ecstatic to find one for 30% off; it's one of the first kits I put on my "wishlist".

In addition to the very small pieces advice, I would also recommend putting decals and stickers on the wings even if one did not intend to put them anywhere else. They can look kinda boring without the color variation.

This looks sick, I like that matte look. What kind of paint and top coat do you use? I'm actually excited for winter so that I can hibernate and do some building

The bridge may be acting up, so here's my quoted reply:

@jodanlime@midwest.social No paint except panel lining. For the top coat I used two airbrushed coats of Vallejo Matt Varnish.

I think I got both replies?

Looks like there was about an hour delay, at least for it to be publicly visible. Not sure when you got the notification, but I originally responded with my Mastodon account within 5 minutes of receiving your comment.

I don't actually have notifications on, I just check my app a few times a day. Notifications stress me out.

I usually only build UC kits, but I might have to make an exception for a few Gundam Wing models.

@jodanlime The RG Wing Gundam (TV) is pretty highly regarded from what I understand, and in addition to this Epyon I've also built the RG Wing Gundam Zero EW and had a lot of fun despite the issues inherent in early Real Grade kits.

I have an RG Sazabi and Nu Gundam that I want to build this winter so I can do some painting in the spring. After that I have an MG RX78 that I won in a drawing at the local shop that needs some love.

[–] augus@ohai.social 2 points 2 months ago

@jodanlime I think the RG Sazabi will be the next kit I hunt down, since I already managed to find a discounted RG Zeong. I hope you have fun with each of those kits!

I've been looking for a red one for my first try maybe this is it. Even if I do it poorly least I was looking forward to a nice red one.

[–] augus@ohai.social 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

@orbitz From what I've heard, the best red RG kits are this and Sazabi, so you can't go wrong with Epyon. Plus, Epyon has wings.

However, if by first try you mean first gunpla I'd honestly recommend something like the HGIBO Grimgerde due to the tiny pieces in the Epyon (and probably the Sazabi), unless you have either a lot of patience or a decent amount of money.

I appreciate the advice, I imagined I'd find something simple for a first go but do love a fun red look. Overall I know I need to find one in my level first for sure. It just looked awesome and fewer red choices than I hoped for.

So thanks for the reinforcement of a simple start, cause it's easy to take on too much and once for sure.

Yet again not sure if my reply went through from Mastodon, so here's the quoted reply:

@orbitz@lemmy.ca Looking for anything that isn't just the top 5 of the year is honestly pretty hard. Here are a few High Grade red releases of varying price and availability from the last couple years:

If you have patience and are willing to pivot, you can do a (good) RG kit as your first. You're more likely to finish a kit you like either way.

Thanks for the suggestions I will check them out. I keep having to reread them to remember the grade scale but since it's minimal investment for tools may as well start small and be interested than too difficult/ time consuming and get frustrated without finishing.
