Starmer went to Palantir, pointed to Russia’s new Max “everything app” and said “I want one of those”

Nah this goes way back, this is home grown New Labor security state ideas. Blair tried doing it 15 years ago and has been banging on about it from the side lines since then.

Many countries both freer, more egalitarian and easier to do business in has a system like this.

It doesn’t HAVE to be an evil thing. But it’s the UK so it most likely will be something something money lobbyism cronyism duck house security leak bullshit.

What's infuriating about this is there already exists forms of ID to verify your right to work in the UK and people employing people without the documentation to prove their right to work in the UK don't give a shit whether they have the correct documentation.

This is a complete waste of time and money which can be better spent elsewhere.

[–] renard_roux@beehaw.org 3 points 3 months ago

Maybe the pertinent question is "Where is the money being spent now? Who is supplying the platform?".

Follow the money?

The new digital ID will be held on people’s phones

It'd be wise to separate digital IDs from expensive tracking devices (smartphones).

What's wrong with an actual card with a chip (but no wireless capability) on it?

[–] 0xtero@beehaw.org 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Hard to use when having to ID you on websites

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

In Germany, this is done via NFC on the chip card, using your phone. Works fine and I get to control when ID is used.

Yeah, the poster above said "no wireless capability" though. NFC is wireless.

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

And even without that, I prefer a single short range wireless connectivity to a multiband device with very high processing power and multiple sensors and various attack vectors having all my effects consolidated in it.

[–] Hirom@beehaw.org 1 points 3 months ago

Agreed. A passive RFID chip, that require an external signal to power itself, is better than a mobile app.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 months ago

What about people who can't afford to have a mobile phone? Or a place to keep it charged? I.e. homeless

[–] Powderhorn@beehaw.org 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

What could possibly go wrong?

[–] sunbeam60@lemmy.one 1 points 3 months ago

A lot of things.

But it could also go right, tbh - lots and lots of civilised countries have a system like this (looking at you Nordic nations) and it’s extremely helpful and bringing government services online in a safe and reliable manner.

Of course this is the UK, so this will probably end up as another Government Gateway boondoggle.

[–] megopie@beehaw.org 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Let’s see if it flops just as hard as Blair’s attempt.

[–] sunbeam60@lemmy.one 2 points 3 months ago

The “small boats” will be used this time. Anything that can be seen to cater to the Tommy Robinson crowd is likely to be accepted by a large majority unfortunately.

[–] belated_frog_pants@beehaw.org 3 points 3 months ago

This is also an anti immigration thing

[–] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 2 points 3 months ago

Is this a brexit all over again? They don't seem to learn

[–] Ulrich_the_Old@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 months ago

Stop electing tories to lead the labour party.
