It's worth noting that the last time I heard Ben Stiller talking Trek - five years ago on the official podcast - he made it pretty clear that he was a TOS fan, and hadn't really seen anything else.

Nothing wrong with that at all, but relevant IMO.

Also, he definitely doesn't actually have a pitch.

...they asked him “Do you have any Star Trek pitches?” He promptly replied, “Yeah, let’s do it.”

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 2 points 10 months ago

He only wants something TOS related (since he only watches TOS). But that won’t happen.

[–] Linktank@lemmy.today -5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Christ... TOS is the worst of them for like the first 6 shows or something. Uncultured swine.

[–] T156@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

What's wrong with it? It's very much a product of its time, but it's still serviceable.

[–] Linktank@lemmy.today -1 points 10 months ago

Just the acting, the writing, and the effects mostly. Otherwise, not so bad.

I love many Star Trek movies, but the big screen is not important to the franchise, and it's best work has always been on the small screen.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 33 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Hear me out, it's called The Orville and... oh, no wait. I'm being handed a message.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 20 points 10 months ago

The Orville isn't "big screen." What we need is a sequel to Galaxy Quest.

the note says "please dont be that guy on the internet"

[–] antithetical@lemmy.deedium.nl 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm sorry if that was a joke that went over my head, but I really don't get the love for The Orville.

The first season was kinda good in a temporary sci-fi wasteland. But the later seasons were mostly cringey teenage angst forced drama with some of the most unsymphatetic characters (e.g. the doctor lady and sons). Attempting to reach Capt. Picard levels of depth in their arguments and sophistication but falling short by a landslide.

The one good moment I can remember about it is the joke about the character being off-center on the viewscreen. Heck, I even prefer Discovery over most of it.

[–] militaryintelligence@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

The Orville isn't Trek. It's Seth MacFarlane comedy with some respectable drama. When he handed the USB drive with Billy Joel on it to his alien fascist girlfriend I teared up. Love is love, man.

[–] rafoix@lemmy.zip 19 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Star Trek tends to suck on the big screen because instead of relatable sci-fi we get action scenes and explosions. It’s not the same.

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Are we watching the same movies because the criticisms I usually hear leveled at the TOS films are that they are too philosophical and boring

[–] isosphere@beehaw.org 1 points 9 months ago

you smashed your little ships

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 16 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I still want the Quentin Tarantino Star Trek movie.

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 5 points 10 months ago

There are dozens of us!

[–] hash@slrpnk.net 2 points 10 months ago

Can you FUCKING IMAGINE? Can you FUCKING IMAGINE, MOTHERFUCKER?

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 14 points 10 months ago (2 children)

If you could make a movie that stays true to the idea of Star Trek while still maintaining broad enough appeal to reach a wider audience, sure.

I believe, to this day, that still has yet to be done. Without the broad appeal it's better to just do the show, and without the ideals of Star Trek... it's just another generic sci-fi action movie.

[–] MudMan@fedia.io 12 points 10 months ago

I mean, at this point I'm willing to give Ben Stiller the benefit of the doubt on all sorts of things.

I don't think he needs the benefit of the doubt on "reach a broad audience" in the first place, because... well, it's Ben Stiller. I mean on the Star Trek ideals thing.

[–] lordnikon@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

They will do just wrath of khan again and call it innovative

[–] entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 10 months ago

IDK, Ben Stiller made Severance, which is pretty thoughtful, philosophical sci-fi. He's got the chops and the interest in making something, the idea leaves me cautiously optimistic.

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

He should just go to the Orville new season or an Orville movie, Star Trek is kinda beyond the point where it can go back to what it was

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 months ago

Maybe his idea isn’t any good though.

[–] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Hasn't basically every star trek movie been kinda bad?

iMO the IP does better when it has time to go slow.

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 4 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Well this is a take I can't believe is being upvoted....

To answer your question, no every movie has been good. I'm sure if they made a Section 31 movie it would be good too but they never actually made it so we'll never know.

[–] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I haven't seen every Star Trek movie but the ones I've seen have been pretty bad.

I'm here for the philosophy and the diplomacy, the movies always feel like they are made for a different audience.

[–] jerakor@startrek.website 2 points 10 months ago

Movie Star Trek is different from TV Star Trek. Except for Insurrection which is just a 2 part episode in a movie trench coat. And probably Section 31 but I don't plan to watch that and find out.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world -1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

The 2009 film was really fucking good IMO. It's what got me interested in the series to begin with.

[–] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

To each their own haha. The 2009 movie was the first ST movie I ever saw and I was not a fan.

FWIW, I mostly enjoy TOS, TNG and DS9. Not a star wars fan at all. To me the movie felt too much like star wars. It wasn't dry enough and didn't feel anything like a televised stage play lmao.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Well I was a huge Star Wars fan at the time (stopped caring after Disney ruined the franchise with excessive content bloat), so that might explain it haha

[–] militaryintelligence@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

DS9 movie. I know some important people are gone but still. DS9 movie

i hope that it's star trek but it's literally just his character from extras.
