I feel like a large majority of the hate towards grampa Joe is just hating the poor for being poor. The man is 80, he retired when his job shut down 20 years prior (when he was 60). Why would you expect an 80 year old man to be actively working? He's 80! Let him be retired!

The bad guy isn't the old man who retired cuz he got laid off, it's the billionaire chocolate mogal who replaced his workforce with slave labor causing thousands to go without a job.

Hey, it's not all bad. Charlie's dad got to work as Toothbrush Machine inspector (whilst the rest of the entire toothbrush workforce were laid off)

I feel like a large majority of the hate towards grampa Joe is just jokes.

From my memory, he started out using the illegal immigrants. He didn't replace normal workers, although you can argue those jobs would have gone to the "right" workers.

:p

He could sing and dance and jump out of bed when he won a free trip but he laid in bed and made his grandson take care of him before that. Joe was a dick.

I kinda want a Grandpa Joe movie starring David Spade. There's a bit of a physical resemblance these days, and there's so much weird stuff going on with Grandpa Joe in the movie that you could have a pretty full movie without Charlie, Wonka, or the chocolate factory.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

It would probably resemble Breaking Bad in a lot of ways.

[–] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I agree with everything except using David Spade. This is clearly a role meant for Martin Short

[–] Welt@lazysoci.al 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

But David Spade looks like him. I know what you mean about Martin Short's vivacity though, he'd be a fine Wonka, whose idea was it to cast Chalamet

dude why do you hate David Spade? Fuck Grandpa Joe

[–] nomous@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

why do you hate David Spade?

I thought we were supposed to. Isn't that half his characters?

[–] rustydomino@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That’s true but Grandpa Joe is maybe a step too far

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

What if the character was canonically an 80 year old Joe Dirt?

[–] 58008@lemmy.world 25 points 2 years ago

This is what it feels like to be on disability even if you never go to the chocolate factory 😆

[–] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago

He would have got out of bed sooner if the floor wasn't so cold

Better hope that golden ticket comes with a golden parachute.

Disability benefits are not "insurance".

[–] RustyEarthfire@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Perhaps not every disability benefit is, but Social Security Disability Insurance and State Disability Insurance certainly are.

[–] CrayonRosary@lemmy.world -2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

We're taking about the U.K.

[–] workerONE@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

We are? Charlie uses a dollar to buy the chocolate bar with the golden ticket. Also, who mentioned insurance? You are the first person to bring it up, saying it's not insurance... Okay it's not insurance but nobody said it was

[–] CrayonRosary@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

Also, since Brexit, the U.K. uses dollars.

[–] Ghoelian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 years ago

Lmao what no they don't, they use the pound sterling, which they also used before brexit

A disability caused by work activity would be covered by worker's comp insurance.

Edit: in California all employees pay into state disability insurance. In the event they become disabled they could receive disability benefits from SDI. If someone were to claim to be disabled it would be disability fraud. Why are we even having this discussion and who cares?

[–] intensely_human@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago

The insurance would lead to a payout that funds an annuity.

If one’s insurance buys a new car, that doesn’t make the car insurance.
