Alberta has now confirmed more measles cases than the entire United States has reported this year.

The province has been battling outbreaks since March and as of noon Monday, total case counts in the province had ballooned to 1,314. The latest update from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that country has amassed 1,288 cases this year.

It is widely believed by experts and health officials that Alberta's case counts are higher than the confirmed numbers reflect. A standing exposure advisory remains in effect for the entire south zone and parts of the north due to widespread transmission.

Alberta is the most conservative and most religious province in Canada. The Prime Minister of Alberta is a woman named Danielle Smith.

This is what she said two years ago:

Alberta is very rich because they have a ton of oil. But it's really badly managed.

Norway has a lot of oil, but Norwegians have an investment fund to help future generations. Norwegians have strong labor rights. They are very environmentally conscious. They try to reduce plastics, they travel by bicycle, they use electric cars.

Alberta is the exact opposite. The big oil companies are privately owned. Local politicians oppose measures to reduce plastics pollution:

Alberta politicians also blame a lot of their local problems on Canada.

It's just sad.

It's actually the second least religious, after British Colombia.

Does the US still have a working reporting system?

[–] NJSpradlin@lemmy.world 19 points 17 hours ago

I wouldn’t trust anything we reported at the moment.

Don't know, the weekly reporting system reports stopped coming months ago. I thought it was just me switching to New Outlook but I guess it's everyone?

Their measles information page is here. The data seems complete, just not as nicely compiled as it used to be. [Their respiratory illnesses page is here.]

I got my measles booster this year and it was no worse than a COVID shot. Scheduling at my local pharmacy it was easy and I got no pushback. (CT, USA)

I'm from the era where we only got 1 shot and now the recommendation is 2 shots for best coverage. I may have gotten a second shot as a kid but I have no record or recollection of it. I figured it's better to be sure.

Alberta is like all the worst states rolled into one.

Oh come on. We'd eat Mississippi's lunch any day.

On fentanyl-laced coke.

Wild, we all got vaccinated against measles as kids here, crazy that Alberta doesn't have they kind of free healthcare yet.

Living in the dark ages.

I mean, we do. I just had a free surgery after a bunch of free doctor's visits.

And I was dosed for free for that and other things as a kid. Some people have just been refusing it.

First thing i could think of is what the coach from letterkenny would say.

It should be Alberta’s tag line. It tracks. Pretty accurately.
