My first game was kind of ruined by someone deciding that rather than trying to win, they would just try to wreck my shit. It wasn’t fun.

But the game seemed like it has a lot of potential otherwise, as long as you have four hours to spare.

I'm jealous. I have a hard time getting it to the table, but when it's there I'm living my best life.

Nice game table!

How do you guys convince your group to play complex stuff like this? My group's more accustomed to Martian Rails and Agricola but I dream about playing Arcs, Cosmic Encounter, or even Twilight Imperium one day.

Alternatively, how does one find a group that is naturally drawn to heavier games?

I recommend eclipse:second dawn over twilight imperium. Almost the same experience in half the game time.

Hey, now. Some of us actually enjoy the absolute chaos of a 9-player TI game that takes 2-3 consecutive sessions of a mere 16hrs each. In fact, I know at least four of them! 😉

I will have to look into that. I have a whole spreadsheet about space-themed conquest/diplomacy games that I'm thinking of trying to get them into. I have to find a game with the right feeling for this group because they're very picky (in a good way) so I appreciate your suggestion.

There is a digital version so you can try it without dropping serious money on it if you want :)

I second that Second Dawn is an incredible update to Eclipse 1st Ed.!

The first edition grabbed my geeky attention so completely that it nearly formed an addiction before Second Dawn was on the horizon. I was immediately and fully onboard — to the point that I sourced minis for the ships (unique to each faction [eg. Silent Death & other OG pewter PCs, 3D-printing originals, etc.]) & the common non-chit pieces, painstakingly hand-painted them in faction themes (4+ colors ea), and ^ahem^ might've even started a weekly public boardgame meetup under the pretense of secretly hoping to get it to the table as often as possible.

(What. 😶‍🌫️ ADHD + THC can be great... in every sense of the term. 🤪)

FWIW, Tabletop Simulator (Discord) is a pretty easy way to scratch that itch if you either can't get your copy to the table in person often enough, or can't afford one of your own, IMHO. Plus, the official Discord server for Arcs' publisher, Leder Games, is chock fulla super nice people more than willing to play with all experience levels across the whole library of games available on TTS Steam Workshop page, in my experience! 🥳

we trained our group up by starting on Sentinels of the Multiverse and then Spirit Island

They're rare to be sure, maybe you start collecting them whenever you play with new people and organise a recurring Crunchy Game Night?

We currently manage about 1 crunchy game night/month

Let me know how it went!
