ICE isn't targeting criminals at all, because criminals shoot back and it's way easier to just arrest random brown people off the street and then deport them to death camps without due process.

When I started pouring the concrete for this slope, the builder assured me it would not be slippery.

No one is allowed to change their opinion when conditions change or they learn new information. You form an opinion then hold on to it no matter what.

[–] octopus_ink@slrpnk.net 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

If you are referring to the title, my point was that this guy was already willing to accept being a step or three closer to evil than I would be, and probably than most of us would be. And still they went too far for him.

It's good that we cleared this up then.

The good news is, anyone deciding to do this won’t make headlines; so especially as other agencies are wrapped into ICE’s mission, this might happen more often and we won’t hear about it.

You mean he's not actually leaving the department of mnlftsiunbf gvcvh fgfrdvbbgi building?

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 14 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

department of mnlftsiunbf gvcvh fgfrdvbbgi

I mean we already have a department literally named for a dog meme. Naming the next one by facerolling on the keyboard wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

If we can get it to say its name backwards, will it go away?

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Let's try it. Ahem: pmurT dlanoD esopeD

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

You need to be wearing fishnets for that to work.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 23 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Easy for you to say. In BC, Canada some buildings like hospitals have signs in Silax, the language of the local Nsyilxcn people.

[–] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 22 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

are you sure the US government hasn’t just regressed to a seal surrounded by gibberish?

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

They do like their seals in the us government, makes for great/easy to design ~~POGs~~ coins. Unless you mean the animal, though i bet someone has a literal seal on a coin somewhere.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

Unless you mean the animal

Pretty sure they mean the animal - we painted one orange and gave it to Putin as a gag gift, but then he sent it back with a bunch of strings attached. It developed a cult following who proceeded to elect the thing as president. It barks out gibberish pretty regularly, and every time it does, we lose more rights.

Pretty standard model of governance, right?

...right?

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 33 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

I wasn't aware that it was specifically targeting criminals at all.

[–] octopus_ink@slrpnk.net 30 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

They have claimed that from the start and it's the standard conservative defense, but at no time has it appeared to be true.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 8 points 19 hours ago

If they're saying it, it's a lie.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago

It used to but now it's not, and that's why people are resigning in protest.

[–] limer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 49 points 1 day ago

Most people have limits ; I can see this man finding out he has a very small moral code he cannot ignore.

Or he simply lost a bureaucratic turf war. There is a lot of reorganization going on , lots of power struggles. And he decided to whitewash and reinvent himself. Even if this guy is legitimate, there will be many of the later later

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 23 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Now I wonder what the guy thought when he signed up for the job.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 25 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Probably what all "good cops" think, "I can change the system from within" or "It's just a couple outlier bad cases, but I'll make sure to only prosecute actual bad people"

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Which isn't a bad idea really. It's an admirable goal.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 hours ago

And then promptly get beaten: https://sh.itjust.works/post/41445902

Dude is now a Police Comissioner, but idk how much reform he can actually do, its not like he can fire 50% of the department

I mean the way I see it, you have to disband the entire thing then form something new with more requirements.

Perhaps just abolish the police and let the people police themselves with a militia, seems better that way.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Doesn't work, but it's an admirable thought.

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

If enough good cops rebel then they can drive the bad cops out. Dream scenario

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 20 hours ago

The issues are systemic and won't be solved by replacing people.

As one example, it would be 100% legal in many states for a bad cop to rape a prisoner. No matter how many good cops testify against them, there would be no legal basis for prosecuting them. At best, department policy would give cause to fire them. Then they'll get a job in some county with an elected sheriff who ran on being Tough On Crime (tm).

[–] meeeeetch@lemmy.world 12 points 23 hours ago

Gonna keep the border safe and stop bad people coming into the country illegally.

Instead (or more likely, eventually), he got "gonna round up anybody who 'fits the description' and unperson them into the Dade-Collier concentration camp"

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 8 points 20 hours ago

Of course the really important thing here, the crux of the whole issue, is that somebody used AI to make an image.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 5 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

The United States needs a department like ICE, every country does, but the current iteration is forever poisoned. People keep calling them Gestapo, but I think Brown Shirts is more on the nose.

I'd like to point out how wrong I was about all this. For years I had commented saying that modern Brown Shorts would rise organically from local MAGA groups, then come together under a federal banner of some sort. I never foresaw the Trump admin short cutting that clumsy method and directly utilizing an existing federal department.

[–] elbucho@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

The United States needs a department like ICE

No, they fucking don't.

What the US needs to do is fix its broken as fuck immigration system. That's what's creating the vast, VAST majority of the problem in the first place. For fuck's sake, it can take decades to obtain citizenship, and that's if you're one of the lucky ones who doesn't just get lost in limbo for reasons.

America should be thanking the people who want to come here to go to school, to find work, or just to live the "American Dream" (TM). Instead, we ended up with a whole bunch of nazis doing fucking nazi shit like tear gassing, hog tying, and frog marching 6 year olds into the back of an unmarked van.

We don't need ICE. What we need is way fewer nazis.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

The thing is we really dont need ICE. We need someone doing the job, but ICE is a 21st century development and any us government department winds up becoming impossible to reduce the power of. If you spread their duties out acrods multiple departments they have a more difficult time doing this shit

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

You speak to my point very well!

[–] lemonskate@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

Yes, ICE, the 22 year old agency is definitely something the US can't do without. Certainly didn't manage fine without it for the vast majority of our history as a country. Fucking hell.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Or rather he was ok supporting the previous mission of ICE.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 2 points 19 hours ago

He's not resigning in protest. All the other recent resignations are the same thing: their phase of work is over.

They handled the difficult part of setting up an apparatus of death quickly, now they hand it off to someone else to run it.

[–] Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

you now see? it should have been blatantly obvious. I didn't even read anything and saw how fake it is visually

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Are we AI shaming now? Hands look pretty good.

[–] Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 hours ago

I was actually people shaming for not seeing the obvious. the photo has been changed to something not fake so can't comment on the hand thing anymore
