KEY POINTS

Pell Grants, college aid for low-income families, could be slashed under both the White House budget proposal and House GOP reconciliation bill.

Donald Trump’s budget would cut the maximum award to the lowest amount in roughly a decade.

About 40% of undergraduates rely on Pell Grants to pay for college, and experts say if the plans are enacted, many of the lowest-income students would be forced to drop out.

Pell Grants helped me get a degree that increased my income, made my life better, and made me a better, taxpaying American.

-Actual client testimonial.

Same, how this helps anyone is beyond me.

It helps the rich. More money and stupider labor.

The rich cant get richer if they dont have anybody educated enough to design and run their production lines.

That’s what H1B visas are for! Then they get dumb labor, and cheap skilled slaves beholden to them to keep their visa and thus life intact!

(Wish I were joking, but this is all facts)

Slash it by what? My kids got the same $ amount I did, back when I went to college when they were little. For me, it covered tuition and some of the books, for them about 1/10th of the tuition. It's already slashed.

Pell grants are definitely a problem: they need to be much bigger. They need to grow to regain their initial “purchasing power” over an education

[–] WagnasT@lemmy.world 11 points 20 hours ago

Because of the Pell grant I was able to get a degree and a great paying job. I've paid far more in taxes than what I received in Pell grants, which probably would not be true if I didn't have it to help me pay for my degree. It literally pays for itself.
