I don't understand why American has to go through this dumb-as-fuck pissing contest every year. For what? So whoever is in opposition can have a larger share of the pork barrel??

Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.
7. No duplicate posts.
If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.
All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

It happens constantly because politicians can fight over it and bundle in otherwise unacceptable riders.
Also... they get a lot of talk show booking fees.
I feel like one party is always the one holding it hostage, and only when their president isn't in charge.
That's not fair! The longest shutdown in US history was under Trump when GOP had full control of the government. They'll happily obstruct themselves too.

Oh yea - this is definitely a favorite tactic of the GOP.
I feel like if I neglected doing a critical function of my job for a year and then grudgingly half did it so that I can coast a few more months, my boss would probably fire me.
What if your boss could only pick from one other person who was just about as bad at your job as you are, once every 2-4 years?
All of these are poor analogies.
Congress is more akin to group projects in school where nobody can properly function and produce something useful.
It's quite simple, the 2 party system created by first past the post in USA sucks.
It's both inefficient and undemocratic.
Countries like Denmark with 10+ parties generally pass national budgets with 80% majority.
There has never in my life time of 60+ years been a period of even a single day, where government didn't work because the national budget wasn't passed.
The cool thing is we don't have to go through this pissing contest!
Except we do, because we keep electing people to congress who wouldn't be qualified to mop the floor at the local mcdonalds, and this is what happens when you send idiots to lead a nation.
Oh it gets better than that - sometimes it’s several times a year because often they just kick the can down the road for 3 or 5 months then have to revisit it again.
