This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

Dogxim, or Graxorra in Portuguese, was a female canid hybrid between a Pampas fox and a domesticated dog that was discovered in Brazil in 2021.

The canid showed a mixture of fox and dog behaviors, and a team of geneticists led by Thales Renato Ochotorena de Freitas and Rafael Kretschmer announced in 2023 that she was a distinct hybrid genetically that "represents the first documented case of hybridization between these two [fox and dog] species".

She was popularized as the first "fox"-dog hybrid documented in the world, although the Pampas fox and other South American foxes are not true foxes, being instead closer genetically to wolf-like canids, which include dogs.

I didn’t know this was possible. That’s crazy.

Dogs have 78 chromosomes (39 haploid pairs), while the Pampas fox, 74 (37 haploid pairs). Additional evidence of hybridisation was the presence of two different X chromosome indicating their origins from two species.

Although she was sterilized during her medical care, scientists believed that she had been capable of reproduction.

In August 2023, Scientists asked the caretakers at Mantenedouro São Braz for fresh pictures of Dogxim. The caretakers replied that she had died six months prior to the request, being recently sterilized.[9] The time and nature of her death were never reported.

Wow great job, guys.

Veterinarian and conservationist Ferrari recalled that the canid had "no indications of any health problems" after her recovery.[13] Six months after the injury, she had been noted as completely healed.[2] The Brazilian government issued concerns on the cause of death.[9] The Secretariat of Environment and Infrastructure (SEMA) is conducting the investigation.

Wake up honey, new $2000 designer dog just dropped

Regular puppies in Ontario, Canada cost $1500-2500 from breeders since COVID. You’re thinking of a number with 5 digits for a designer dog.

its also bad because crossbreeding destroys the population of the fox population, polluting the gene pool of the fox species.

Interesting. Didn't know Canis Lupus wasn't native in South America. Also interesting that the Pampas Fox isn't even in the same genus as dogs, yet interbreeding was successful (by happenstance?).
