Might you have "hide read" turned on? You can turn if off by tapping on the (...) button in the top-right of a community, then tapping "show read".

Rules
- Keep it civil.
- This is a forum for discussion about Mlem. We welcome a degree of general chatter, but anything not related to Mlem may be removed at moderator discretion. This is not a forum for iPhone/Android debate. Posts and comments saying nothing but "iOS bad/I use Android" will be removed as off-topic.
- We welcome constructive criticism, but ask that it be both precise and polite.
FAQ
- When will insert feature here be implemented?
- Check our issue board--if there isn't an issue open for the feature you want, feel free to open an issue or make post! Just remember that devs are people too--we're doing this for free in our spare time, and building a quality app takes a lot of patient work.
- Is Mlem available for Android?
- No. Mlem is written using SwiftUI, which is not currently supported on Android. If such support becomes available, we will look into bringing Mlem to our Android friends.
- How do I join the beta?
- How do I join the dev team?
- Head over to our recruitment channel, or go straight to our GitHub and read CONTRIBUTING.md to get started.
That was it! So does mlem just count posts you've replied or reacted to as read? Or are there some other criteria? I would maybe want some indication that there are hidden posts available to unhide.
edit: also saw the "mark read on scroll"
A post is marked as read when you open, upvote, downvote, save, or reply to it. If you enable "mark read on scroll" it'll mark posts as read when you scroll past them. Posts that are marked as read will have a slightly dimmer title text.
I would maybe want some indication that there are hidden posts available to unhide.
Yeah, this is something we'd like to do. "Hide read" is enabled has proven to be a very common cause of confusion; we need to make it more obvious somehow.
thanks! i think its a good feature, i was just oblivious to it.
Should this show up somewhere as an app-wide setting instead of only as a per-community view tweak?
It is app-wide at the moment - if you enable "Hide Read" from a certain community, it is enabled in all communities. The button is available from the feed, rather than from settings, because it is an option that users may want to toggle on the fly. We also have the "post size" and "blur NSFW" settings available from the feed for the same reason.
In future, we'd like to make community sorting and filtering options (incl. hide read) saved per-community for ease of use, or at least the option for it to work that way. Issue here
Aha, I took the incorrect assumption that all app-wide settings would show up under the settings menu.
Just noticed that mark read on scroll does appear to give the check just as soon as the post scrolls out of view like it's marked read, but often isn't effective, so if i leave a feed and return to it the post is back and unchecked/unread. But if I react, then it does effectively mark it.
