Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

The alleged gunman was identified as 20-year-old FSU student Phoenix Ikner, Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil said. Mr Ikner also was shot by police and is in hospital.

Mr McNeil said he is the son of a Leon deputy and one of the guns found at the scene is a former service weapon purchased by the gunman's mother, Jessica Ikner, a school resource office on the force for 18 years.

Every part of that is so unsurprising I could cry laughing.

Totally forgot it was school shooting season.

For those outside the US, April is statistically VERY high for school shootings. Mostly because columbine took place in April and all copycats have since followed.

You're shooting the wrong people.

Careful, the right wing mods here might see this as “uncivil” ;)

They've already banned me several times for my outspoken opinions. I keep resurrecting somehow. As you can easily see this alt account is pretty new from the last ban. As a Canadian I hope I can at a minimum, piss off every one of those assholes who want to invade our country. Getting banned is a badge of honor.

I'm drunk so this might be an unnecessary comment but I wish you safety comrade. I'm an American who is severely worried about the future of their country and honestly your fear is fair. Be safe and stock up on whatever you can. Don't stop being transgressive, all forms of resistance are valuable. I hope what I see in our future does not come to pass.

I see that future as well but it won't stop me. No fear of that. We have a plan and are prepared early for that circumstance. I'm an old man. I've had a good life but I got some kick left in me. As long as I draw breath I will not stop resisting.

As a side note watch that booze friend. Took me decades to quit and your market is about to be flooded with cheaper booze from us not buying. Literally billions of dollars of booze sitting in wearhouses. It's a rough time. Go easy on yourself.

[–] blakenong@lemmings.world 5 points 10 months ago

Fuck yeah it is ;) Keep speaking.

In order for them to understand who the "right" people are, they'd need to be able to see the bigger picture. If they could see the bigger picture, they'd realize that they have better options than murder.

There's a point that loops back FYI

[–] smegger@aussie.zone 27 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Shootings in America. With the frequency, I'm almost surprised it still makes the news.

[–] blakenong@lemmings.world 16 points 10 months ago

They rarely do. Gotta hide it apparently

[–] liverbe@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago

There was one in Dallas yesterday, but no one died, so it probably wasn't even a blip on the news.

[–] workerONE@lemmy.world 24 points 10 months ago

"The suspect was a "longstanding member" of the sheriff office's youth advisory council and was engaged in a number of training programmes, Sheriff McNeil said.

"So it is not a surprise that he had access to weapons," he said."

No one ever asks or follows up to ask later .... WHAT MEDICATIONS WERE THEY ON?

The biggest industries in the US is guns and pharmaceuticals .... mix into all that a media landscape and a social media fantasy land of misinformation, disinformation and non-information to make people as angry, upset, scared and frightened as possible.

Pump them up with mind altering medications ... bombard them with misinformation ... then give them a gun

What do you think will happen.

The only thing I ever surprised about all this is that it doesn't happen more often
