The move comes after President Donald Trump issued an executive order in January declaring that the U.S. has become too dependent on foreign energy sources. The order mandates that federal agencies identify energy infrastructure projects for expedited emergency permitting from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The corps designated the tunnel project on Line 5 as an emergency under the order late Tuesday. The corps had initially planned to make a permitting decision early next year. Corps officials were vague during a conference call with reporters Wednesday morning about how quickly the process may move forward.

Ooh a new environmental apocalypse coming soon

How long until they poison the largest freshwater system on earth?

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It’s already poisoned.

They’re planning to drain it before the invasive species they stopped protecting against finish the job.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I thought that’s what the zebra mussels were for

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Those are actually one of the invasive species…

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, but I was joking because they filter the water so well, too well

declaring that the U.S. has become too dependent on foreign energy sources.

That is the stupidest reasoning for this. Line 5 shuttles Canadian oil, from Canada snaking its way through Wisconsin, Through Michigan’s UP, under the Great Lakes, through Michigan’s LP to refineries in Canada on the other side…

None of that reduces US foreign energy dependence.

Meanwhile, wind and solar are getting all the support pulled. You know, because we can't risk bring dependent on imported wind or sunlight.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 weeks ago

Wind is created through the warming of surfaces via sunlight. All sunlight is imported. We can't avoid sunlight, so we should just put tariffs on it. That will teach Sol.

After WW3, there won’t be any sun or wind will there. That’s a 5D chess move right there.

Because he’s coming for Canada and it’s his plan to own it.

This is why we hate. Never again. The USA is dead to us as a partner.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

Partner? I'd suggest state.

> declare that the U.S. has become too dependent on foreign energy sources
> block and cancel all contracts and projects for alternative energy.

I am dumbfounded by this decision. Apparently we didnt learn our lesson when Lake Erie was so polluted it CAUGHT ON FIRE!

I grew up in the Great Lakes region and they are truly marvels. You can stand on the edge of the lake and look out and the lake meets the horizon like looking out from the edge of an ocean!

The Great Lakes give the US and Canada a level of water security that alomst no other countries have. This is crucial as climate change continues to disrupt weather patterns throughout the world.

And we want to fuck it up for oil?! The god damn pil companies get so much subsides from the federal government already just build the pipe elsewhere that doesnt put our largest and possibly most important source of fresh water in danger!

Yet they halted construction on a wind farm project for being too hastily executed under Biden

Jesus Fucking H Christ I wish Trump would drop dead.

"Fast track" = rush the project overworking and cut costs by deregulating and skipping safety measures? Maybe? Probably?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

Probably. Gotta 'save' that money.

How much tariff is on oil that enters the US, travels through the Great Lakes, then returns directly to Canada?

Also, Enbridge was responsible for the largest oil leak in Michigan, and one of the largest inland leaks in US history. We don't trust Enbridge anymore.
