Realizing that not every moment in life will be deep, or meaningful, or vibrating with energy that would give him the fulfillment that he'd always hoped for, Todd unloaded the dishwasher.

ikr I feel really fulfilled unloading the dishwasher.

whenever I feel overwhelmed, I do some simple task, it's more centering than meditation.

Instead of finding external stimuli to make him fulfilled maybe Todd should work on finding fulfillment in the here and now.

On a serious note:

My job in a ten day Vipassana retreat was to wash the dishes. No eye contact with anyone or talking. We were meant to focus on the moment.

It was only at the very end that I realised my dishwashing partner was a woman I would have found attractive so I really did give it my best shot but was pissed off at the end because I felt no different from all the meditation.

A year later when tripping at a forest rave I decided to meditate in the chill out zone. I realised then that the Vipassana did have benefits after all and took up meditation again.

being happy without external stimuli is called a Droud and it's a terrifying concept.

Directly triggering the brains rewardcentre with a device. I would definitely call that an external stimulus. But that depends on whether you use a literal or figurative meaning of the word 'external'.
