We forget how disturbingly cruel and barbarian groups of people and the state can be.

Oh, it was always worse. But it does always get better. They'll say it about us one day; so long as we aren't currently approaching the finish line of society as it stands.

But remember that with the whole "the arch of history bends towards justice" it does not do it on its own. There is no rule in the universe that says that. It only bends if we are the ones actually bending it.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Then the saying is meaningless.

Not necessarily. It could express that over time enough people will always "bend the arch". It's still not a passive thing that just happens. But even then it could make you complicit if you don't understand that you can influence how fast it bends.

But it does always get better.

That is unfortunately not a given at all.

[–] PixelatedSaturn@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes, but I don't completely believe this. I think it can get worse.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I think it cycles better/worse/better/worse with an incremental trend towards better

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Bingo. And in reference to our entire history, I don't see why it would suddenly be any different forr singular generations. It's so much a pattern set in stone that it could be said it is our nature.

You might. Leftists know ACAB.

Whose this "we" -- I've been anti death penalty since before I could vote because I have never been able to forget.

I would go so far as to say not only is the death penalty anti American, any one who wants the death penalty to remains needs to be added to a pool from which some is randomly executed; affirming their resolve and devotion.

It's really weird how some people can take any kind of statement, no matter how well meant, and make it about themselves. You aren't even the first.

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's really weird how people use sloppy language in their statement and then are upset about it.

Then they ignore the rest of the comment because they are too triggered to do otherwise. Then end the comment by making about exactly what they claimed the first one wasn't about.

People aren't computers. The statement was general, not about the death penalty. You completely failed and wanted to make it about yourself and have an argument.

That's completely silly. But you know, whatever you say, this is crazy. Have a nice day, hope you relax and take it easy. Bye.

What the fuck are you talking about?

The post is about the death penalty and you related mentioned how "we" forgot how barbaric governments are.

I mentioned I've never forgotten and therefore not part of that "we" and brought it back to the death penalty, you know, the actual topic of this thread.

Talk about silly, crazy and making things about yourself. The only explanation for all this is that "we" was referencing all the voices in your head.
