The moderators of our !writing@slrpnk.net community have started collecting some resources on possible Solarpunk story and world-building elements on our wiki. They are still looking for additional ideas, so please share good resources on the community.
โธ๏ธ Meta Post Image: Children Ice Skating on Frozen Canals โ๏ธ
The City of Amsterdam has over 100km (62 miles) of waterways intersecting the city, built initially as defensive moats that grew in concentric rings as the city increased in size. Today, they are part of an integral transportation network, and many inhabitants get around by boat.
When the weather forecast is cold enough, boat traffic is stopped in select canals to allow the water to freeze. It doesn't happen every year, and the last time it occurred was in 2021, when this picture was taken. The primary activity is communal ice skating, but it's possible to travel across the entire city on ice skates once enough of the waterways are frozen.
The choice of post image was inspired by the wiki additions of JacobCoffinWrites, specifically the section on seasonal roads. You can find more examples and ideas for imagining Solarpunk cities -- and you can add your own as well!
๐ก Technical Updates ๐ก
In December we moved the Lemmy instance to a different server because we identified some odd hardware issues on the previous server (much slower than expected read speeds on the NVMe SSD raid). While doing so we also took the opportunity to upgrade the database and re-examine the database tuning at bit. While both together seems to have improved overall speed of the site, we are still seeing the regular out-of-memory issue of the database container that causes stalling of the site and temporarily breaks the XMPP account integration. Unfortunately, this issue seems to have become more acute, since the new server has a bit less free memory. We are still looking into possible workarounds but at least it has become a bit more clear now what the possible cause of this issue might be.
๐ How to Support SLRPNK.net ๐ฑ
If you'd like to donate to SLRPNK to help cover Internet, electricity, and domain name costs, you can now send a one-time or reoccurring donation via our F-hub donation site: https://contribute.f-hub.org/
We also offer Librapay as an option for those who already have an account there, which supports reoccurring donations: https://liberapay.com/F-hub.org/
(Note: the Librapay option supports the broader F-hub project, of which SLRPNK is a part of. If you'd like all of your donation to go toward SLRPNK, use the alternative F-hub donation link, and select 'slrpnk.net' in the 'reason' drop-down instead)

You missed the bang in this community link. !foodnotbombs@slrpnk.net
Thanks for the shoutout to !theboonkdocks@slrpnk.net
Is the piefed migration still planned?
ETA community links are case sensitive. FoodNotBombs and TheBoondocks are different than foodnotbombs and theboondocks (can you even use caps in community names?)
Edit2: it actually is !FoodNotBombs@slrpnk.net and that answers my question.
Yes, but no ETA. In January I will be busy with another project and in February I might be on an extended work related travel (to be confirmed). So maybe in March I will find the time to start looking into it in more detail. But converting the database to not lose all the old posts and accounts will not be so easy, so don't expect immediate results.
As long as it is still planned. I have been using piefed more and am liking it a lot.
Wish I knew more computer stuff so I could offer my help.
Cheers for catching those! I didn't realize that bang links were case sensitive, good to know.
AFAIK the Piefed migration is still planned to take place sometime this year. @poVoq would be able to give a better time estimate.
Something is still wrong with the FoodNoBombs link, at least in the main Lemmy-UI frontend (which acts a bit odd with these links). Edit: it is a typo in the slrpnk part.
Fixed! though oddly it worked on my end through lemmy-ui even with the typo somehow.
They may actually not be case sensitive, your typo in foodnotbombs and my typo in the creation of the boondocks... I have an extra k in there, caused issues.
Any way there is an admin way to go into the community and fix my typo?
I think due to the way communities federate, their URL names likely cannot be changed once created (at least, I don't have an option to change it as an admin when I visit it, I can only alter the Display Name, which is different).
Since that community is still relatively new, it may be easier to create a new one with corrected spelling and then delete the old one. If you go that route, I could update the meta to point toward the new community :)
I did not know if you could go into the database and change it in there or not.
Since I only have 77 subscribers currently, I am going to start a new one. I feel like such a goober making that typo.
According to @poVoq@slrpnk.net, changing the name of the community in the database would cause federation issues, unfortunately.
and the boondocks comm only works with the extraneous k in it (and me, not being a boondocks knowledger is wondering if there was some reference involving that extra k)
No, I never noticed I messed up that. Doh!
oh
uh-oh...
Thanks to you bringing it to my attention, it has been fixed and now the community is at !theboondocks@slrpnk.net
And we already have more subscribers than we did at the old community.
yayyy it worked out :)
Hello, I'm new here, but scanning the topic list, I feel right at home.
Same here, gotta find your people and then help others see there is another way.
Welcome aboard, Geo :)
