Meta (slrpnk.net)
Here we can discuss anything about this Lemmy instance/server itself.
Our XMPP support chat: Movim or XMPP client.
We are finally moving to a better container format for our Movim instance later this week. This will hopefully fix those persistent image preview issues we started having ever since switching to the old container format that lacks an image proxy.
The instance will be probably down for an hour or so as we need to reorganize a few things with the storage and overall setup.
Your access to the XMPP server with other apps should be unaffected.
Oh and in case you didn't notice yet, Movim recently added Discord like voice channels that you should definitely give a try 👍
Each month, we create a post to keep you abreast of news and happenings regarding the server, discuss recent events, and to act as town square for the community.
🌟 Community Highlights 🌟
- !spoonbreadtube@slrpnk.net - A community for sharing videos about labor issues centered on Appalachia, but almost anything that can be connected to the region is welcome (the creator is posting a great documentary that they've been excited to share, so be sure to check it out!)
- !solarpunktravel@slrpnk.net - Community for those focused on sustainable travel.
- !disasterresponse@slrpnk.net - Disaster response, community prepping, mutual aid… everything that can help to weather the ongoing and coming disasters (perhaps especially helpful for those experiencing a heatwave)
🌆 A quiet month 😌
Overall, June was a fairly quiet month for the instance. We did tweak the taglines mentioned in the last meta to rotate between different highlights, as all of it at once was looking a bit cluttered if viewed from a mobile browser. But otherwise, things have mostly been purring along.
For the graph enthusiasts among us (I know you're here >_>), let's take a quick look at the instance's stats.

According to our fediverse.observer page, we're continuing to see a steady flow of new users signing up, now totaling 2,369, and our Monthly Active Users (MAU) are hovering at around ± 380 users, which has been pretty consistent for a little over a year now.

This month's artwork is Library Truck by Jacob Coffin (CC BY-ND 4.0), who is also a member here!
It depicts how a library economy might collect unwanted or unused furniture and appliances to be brought to a local warehouse and assessed and repaired, so that it can then be repurposed and given out to people in the community who need it. There's a more detailed write-up by Jacob Coffin in the link above, for those interested. :)
It's another image from the awesome Story Seed Library, which incidentally just concluded their their 2026 Disaster Preparedness, Response and Relief Art Collab, and we're excited to see the submissions from it! :D

After a long hiatus of security fixes only the development of Etherpad has recently taken up speed again. But it seems to be nearly fully vibe coded with the help of Anthropic Claude and the amount of new features added makes it very unlikely that there is sufficient human code review.
I bring this up because as you probably know we host an instance of it over at https://pads.slrpnk.net/
Aside from the general issues with AI assisted code development and corporate capture through closed AI models like Claude, I consider it also a security risk as the NodeJS ecosystem (Etherpad is using that) is especially vulnerable to supply-chain attacks and AI halluciations make this issue significantly worse.
So basically this means we will probably have to shut down this service soon (stopping to update it is not a good option due to the many security issues found in NodeJS packages all the time), and look for an alternative.
If you have any important collaborative documents on our Etherpad instance, it would be good to export them in the near future. Best would be probably to export it as Markdown, as most alternatives seem to use that syntax.
As for alternatives, suggestions are welcome, but I did look into other options before (Hedgedoc, Cryptpad etc.) and was not so convinced by them either.

📣 Experiments with Taglines 📣
Lemmy has a 'tagline' feature which allows an admin to add some custom text or links at the top of the main page.
Inspired by how the admins of Pawb.social are using theirs, we've decided to experiment with implementing something similar; adding useful links to what Solarpunk is, highlighting our XMPP and the alternative frontends we host, as well as a link to our liberapay for those who'd like to support the instance.
I believe highlighting our XMPP in this way may be particularly impactful, as a surprising number of our members have told me they weren't aware that it exists, or that they can access it without having to create a new separate account (it uses the same database that your slrpnk.net login uses, allowing you to use your existing SLRPNK username and password to access it).
If you feel it takes up too much space, we have the option to spit up the different sections and rotate through them individually when the page reloads. We'd love to your thoughts on it. :)
UPDATE: We noticed the main page was a little too busy from a mobile browser, so we opted to switch it up and rotate between the XMPP and Alternative frontend taglines to save space.
🚧 Piefed Migration Update 🚧
For those unaware, we've been looking into a potential future migration to Piefed, which has been discussed in previous Monthly Meta threads.
We've mainly been eyeing the prospect of migrating due to a persistent database bug with Lemmy which has been particularly troublesome. However, it's quite a big task to migrate our instance with all of its comments and communities intact, and poVoq would be pioneering that endeavor, as it hasn't been done before. It is also likely that all pictures previously uploaded to SLRPNK would not make the jump to Piefed, which is an unfortunate downside.
In the time since we considered migration, Lemmy development has begun to approach a stable 1.0 release, and with it are some changes to how it handles the database which could potentially fix the issues we've been experiencing. It also would bring with it some long requested quality of life features.
Due to that new development, we've decided to give Lemmy 1.0 a trial run to see if it resolves our issues, and reassess from there if a Piefed migration is still warranted.

We will likely have a 2 hour or so down-time of our Lemmy server this coming weekend (16/17th of May).
The plan is to update the OS and finally move the database and main backend back to the original server. It should be relatively quick as we will move the NVMe drives directly instead of copying the files over.
The initial OS upgrade will only affect the Pictrs image server of our Lemmy instance, so don't be overly surprised when the images fail to load first.
Of course fingers crossed nothing goes wrong when messing with the hardware 😅
The other services should be unaffected, but newly logging into the XMPP server will not be possible while the main Lemmy database that holds the accounts is offline.
Edit: all done I hope.
for these reasons:
- The enshittification topic is not a Solar Punk topic
- The moderator:
- has contempt for privacy in a relatively privacy-centric forum
- is oppressive
- uses censorship to control the narrative and silence viewpoints
- practices selective enforcement (censors civil comments while permitting off-topic threadcrap that reinforces the mod’s viewpoint)
- is non-transparent (witholds specific rationale for mod actions)
It’s great to have thematic instances like slrpnk.net which are in short supply amid the ocean of general purpose nodes. It’s of course good for thematic nodes to stay close to their “constitution” (declared purpose). The relevance of tech enshittification to solar punk is a tenuous stretch and very slight at best. To keep with the theme, admins might want to consider locking the forum to prevent new threads while keeping the history of posts in reach for a while for archival purposes.
If it is decided that enshitification is fitting enough to keep, consider replacing the moderator who does not represent solar punk values. Oppressive tyrannical types are not a good representation for slrpnk.net.

✊🏾 May Day! ✊
On this day, 140 years ago in 1886, U.S. workers and unions called for a general strike in support of the 8 hour work day. While many answered the call in New York, Detroit, and Milwaukee; Chicago was the one to show up on a mass scale, numbering over 400,000 strong, a large amount of them Anarchists.
However, on the third day of the strike, police fired wildly into the crowd of striking workers, killing at least one, and injuring numerous others. Anarchists called for a mass meeting the next day in Haymarket Square to protest the brutality. Though the meeting was peaceful and naturally began to disperse on its own, police once again gathered themselves, 180 strong, and confronted the meeting workers to demand they disperse immediately (and unlawfully). At this moment, a bomb was thrown into the police column, by who, history hasn’t revealed, but it prompted the police to open fire into the crowd once more, this time killing 4 workers, alongside 7 police deaths to friendly fire.
What followed was a mass terror of warrantless police raids against union shops, meeting halls, printing presses, and private homes. One group quickly became the target of blame, and without evidence, a sham trial was conducted against 8 Anarchists. The jury (composed of businessmen) were told “Law is on trial. Anarchy is on trial. These men have been selected, picked out by the Grand Jury, and indicted because they were leaders. They are no more guilty than the thousands who follow them. Gentlemen of the jury; convict these men, make examples of them, hang them and you save our institutions, our society.”
One was sentenced to 15 years, the other 7 sentenced to death. A global protest campaign resulted in two more being spared the noose in favor of life sentences, the others weren’t so lucky. Nearly half a million lined the roads leading the their funeral, and as many as 50,000 attended in honor of what are now known as the Haymarket Martyrs. We now remember them on May 1st. May Day.
This day is often chosen to host protests, rallies, and other activist events, and today is no different. There’s another thing we can do to not only honor those past heroes, but to bolster the current resistance as well; Unionize.
Not only does unionizing your workplace bring almost immediate benefits to you and your co-workers (a living wage, benefits, more time off), it also lets us fight back against the regime with an effective general strike, just as it worked in 1886 (they wouldn’t have fought us so hard if it didn’t). You can find resources to help you unionize in the Union Resources section of this post.

🚦 Lemmy.World Defederation and Refederation with Anarchist.Nexus 🚦
Recently, Lemmy.World's primary administrator MrKaplan defederated from Anarchist.Nexus and threatened to defederate Lemmy.DBZer0.com, two large anarchist Lemmy instances. After significant feedback and discussion he has since refederated Lemmy.world with Anarchist.Nexus.
SLRPNK is not an anarchist instance, anyone who feels affinity with the Solarpunk movement to create a better world is welcome here. That said, I and my fellow admins are anarchists. I think I speak for most other anarchists who have found a home on SLRPNK as well when I say that we can't help but view MrKaplan's careless behavior as an attack all people who share our moral and political convictions: what is happening in Palestine is a genocide, and Zionism is the ideology that fuels it.
The Fediverse is a collection of small social media servers that through coordination build a grassroots network of human connection that is growing to rival centralized corporate social media. Despite the political diversity across this network, we share a common value -- decentralized social media is important. We would like to see this network continue to grow, and that means adding more servers to our federation and nurturing the ties that we already share. Defederation means a severing of all communication between two servers. This is a blunt tool that instance admins should be careful to wield, and it should certainly not be done in anger or over a bruised ego. It is however a tool that we do deploy for various reasons from time to time, be it for reasons of federated feed curation, more technical reasons like preventing abuse coming from unmaintained instances, or in rare cases due to severe ideological misalignment. Especially in the last case we are careful to ensure that none of those decisions are taken lightly or in anger and we typically document our reasons for each in either our monthly meta posts, or in their own separate post on c/Meta. We have and will continue to take the issue of which servers we federate with extremely seriously, and listen to our members for their feedback on this topic.
These events are extremely recent and we're still processing the news. Further discussion is welcome in the comments.

🔕 Defederation from Poa.st 🛑
Poa.st is a Soapbox instance (a Mastodon-like microblogging software) which was used in a now debunked disinfo attempt to paint Dbzer0 and Anarchist.Nexus as being the target of entryism by a group of antisemitic Nazis.
While that specific doctored conversation did not take place, that group of individuals on poa.st was likely chosen due to displaying nazi behavior elsewhere on that instance, which enhanced the credibility of the disinfo attempt. For those same reasons, we have chosen to defederate from Poa.st on the same ideological grounds that we defederated from Maga, place and HilariousChoas (which you can read here in last year's November Monthly Meta).
As it is a Mastodon-like instance, it hosts no communities that our users would've followed, which means it should not noticeably effect any of our users. Instead, the defederation will effectively only block poa.st users from directly interacting with posts on our instance.

Is there currently a Solarpunk community for booklovers/Solarpunk reading recommendations, etc? I came to think of it when I was going to ask around if anyone was still using book swapping sites like BookMooch and Paperback Swap, but it would be a nice place for other book discussions, too. I did use search on the communities page, and it didn't turn up exactly what I was looking for, but there's always the possibility that I was using the wrong search terms.
what’s wrong with slrpnk.net reaching out to hilariouschaos.com?
It’s interesting that c/hardware seems to no longer exist, but I can still post to the ghost of that community on the instance holding my account:

I think c/hardware must have been removed a very long time ago, yet fedi instances remain unaware. Is there never a syncing?

🪖 A new day is upon us. Do not be alarmed, be Joyous. 🐸

Comrades! It is with great and distinct pleasure that I, ProdigalFrog, may inform you all of a great change which has occurred.
Unbeknownst to all of you, a hidden civil war has been waging between the SLRPNK admins, starting from a tourist trip to Lenin's Mausoleum, where my eyes were for the first time opened to the wonders of Marxism-Leninism (and the wonders of modern embalming techniques). It was then that I began to plot for revolution within the server.
Five quite wisely and correctly took my side in the plot against the Anarchist bandit poVoq.
A well-timed, powerful body-blow of multi-page citations, semantics, and overwhelming dogma to poVoq's metaphorical spleen resulted in his complete and utter defeat. This brought with it, shall we say... a change of guard.
But not to fret, poVoq is currently recovering from his unfortunate and repulsive non-hierarchical principles at one of our top re-education summer camps established in the highly comfortable and luxurious frozen northern instances of Lemmy (along with the server SLRPNK is hosted on, since neither I nor Five have the skills to actually keep it running).

With that business out of the way, Five and I can finally begin to right the ship that is SLRPNK, beginning with a new chapter in our history. In particular, we are announcing the formation of a new people's party: The Solarpunk Vanguard Party of the Quiet Proletariat Who Are Good Listeners.
And what is a Party without its own flag? We have slaved away to create a true tapestry that perfectly reflects the will and spirit of the users here:

Doesn't it just... Bring a tear to your patriotic eyes?
To defend against our enemies, both external and internal, such a fledgling party will naturally need the gentle yet firm guiding hand that only true Vanguards can provide. Thus, both Five and myself have graciously elected ourselves to lead this new party (no need to thank us).
With a new party comes new rules to ensure the safe continuation of the server. Thankfully, after careful consideration and a quick consultation with Lenin's well preserved and... surprisingly attractive corpse, we have assembled a list which Five shall now present to you. Comrade Five?

Comrades, let us get straight to the business at hand.
- Users must make at least five posts per day, no more, no less. If a user does not listen, and commits the shitlib sin of six posts, the sixth shall be removed without warning, and the username will be logged for the infraction.
- Any and all mentions of bread, especially in relation to conquests, is hereby prohibited, for it has been determined to be a capitalist bourgeoisie plot by western media.
- The admins will take on moderator roles in all communities, for the safety of the proletariat.
- The total amount of communities on the instance must be divisible by five. Any new community that alters this balance will be seen as questioning the wisdom of the party, which may be investigated.
- A new Vanguard committee will be selected from 5 trusted members, chosen by myself.
Lastly, we will be adopting the proven Four Pests ecological program from the glorious Chinese state, which we fully expect our members to embrace. While it is near perfection, I have personally determined the need for one minor modification; the addition of a fifth pest to the list, thus rendering it the Five Pests Campaign.
The 'pest' in question is not merely a threat to crops, or to our server, but is in fact a threat to the ultimate goals of our collective Marxist-Leninist project.
My fellow solarpunks, I declare the Frog, and all of their amphibian kind, to be an enemy of the state!!! Take up arms and exterminate all things which croak, hunt them down wherever they may hide, let them not slink and slither into their debaucherous ponds, do this in the name of progressin-

Ahem.
Yes, well... Clearly, Comrade Five's mind has been infected by the west, manipulating them into a treasonous counter-revolutionary plot against me. They will soon be joining poVoq at the luxury summer camps to learn the error of their ways.
On that revelation, I must leave to attend to new duties; hastily learning GIMP to edit Comrade Five out of our flippin' sweet boating trip pics.
👏 Okay, good talk everyone. Have a glorious April!

This has been brewing for some time and the original plan was to only hide them from the "All" feed so that they would not pollute our member curated federated feed, but the feature to do so is sadly very inaccessible in Lemmy (hidden as a admin only API command that isn't exposed in the UI, making it a real hassle to use).
But these days these bot spam instances started to take up a lot of space on the federated feed, so I feel like full defederation is warranted now.
The bot spam instances identified so far are:
- https://lemmit.online/ (Reddit repost spam)
- https://lemmy.durstig.online/ (Reddit repost spam)
- https://ibbit.at/ (RSS feed spam)
- https://news.abolish.capital/ (RSS feed spam)
Additionally there are some bot accounts that are solely reposting RSS feeds and thus should also be banned:
This is a work in progress list. Feel free to suggest additional bot spam instances or accounts here in the comments. Thanks.
P.S.: If you run a individual RSS post bot for a community you moderate here on SLRPNK and it isn't spamming the federated feed with an excessive amount of posts, then there is no need to remove it.
Edit: the above instances are now defederated and the bot banned.

🌍🌐 No borders, no nations! Discussion Summary 🚧🛑
Last month we asked you for your thoughts on country and region-specific community creation on SLRPNK.net. We were impressed by several of your insightful ideas. It seems there is a strong sentiment that SLRPNK should continue to host regional / country based communities.
We've put together a draft policy on regional / country based communities. Currently we have four communities that fall into this category:
- !ireland@slrpnk.net - Solarpunk Ireland
- !sea@slrpnk.net - Southeast Asia
- !vietnam@slrpnk.net - Vietnamese culture community
- !EUpolitics@slrpnk.net - Discussions on European Union politics
The community !Ireland by @Greenbeard is currently the gold standard in how we feel region communities should operate. Using the region name as the API community name keeps the URL shorter, while using "Solarpunk Ireland" specifies that the community has a narrow discussion and news focus. Regional communities should follow this template.
The Southeast Asia community by @Mambabasa is an excellent example of posting news for discussion that is relevant to this instance. We'd love to see that continue and grow.
The !Vietnam community by @kid2908 is our oldest regional community. We'd love to see it grow, as not only does the region have many Solarpunk aesthetics, there is potential for a vibrant solarpunk counter-culture among the people. Posts about environmental activism, community celebrations, public transit developments, and grassroots anti-corruption movements are some of the great topics this community has brought to our attention.
We hope these communities will attract people from their regions to discuss local solarpunk-relevant news and initiatives. In keeping with our server's internationalist spirit, we also encourage people outside those regions to visit these communities to learn more about their world. People submitting stories are encouraged to crosspost from these regional Solarpunk communities to the general !solarpunk community as well.
If any of these communities achieve a critical mass, we'd be happy to support them with technical assistance when they're ready to transition to their own instance. We'd like to see the Fediverse grow horizontally, and increasing the number of servers hosted by like-minded people is one of our aspirations.
The !EUpolitics community by @whvholst is the only current regional community whose subject seems outside our server context with no easy modification to resolve the contradiction. While individual moderators are free to allow political discussion within the broader frame of their community topic, we've tried to avoid building communities with a focus specifically on politics. We encourage politics that are grassroots, horizontal, and bottom-up. We made an exception for !pleasantpolitics based on the motivation of the moderator and the novelty of the concept, but don't want to make that the general case.
We're happy for people to use our server to learn the capabilities of the software and get an idea of what moderating a community is like. We're also happy to be a resource to moderators in re-homing their growing communities to other places in the Fediverse where they would be more appropriate.
Regional or country-specific communities are permitted on SLRPNK.net so long as the topic of discussion is solarpunk-centric. Local opportunities to get involved in grassroots initiatives, environmental news, biome-specific gardening, are all examples of celebrated discussion. Stories about national crime, politicians, economic policy, and wars are not an appropriate focus for regional communities on this server.
Thank you everyone for your feedback on the proposed community rule last month. You're also welcome to discuss this draft policy for regional communities in the comments below.
🏚️ A Call for Yet More Moderators! 🏡
@SolarMonkey@slrpnk.net is currently looking for some additional help moderating our !art@slrpnk.net and !aesthetic@slrpnk.net communities.
Both communities are very laid back, and shouldn't require much attention as a mod to maintain. You'd mostly just need to respond to the odd user report for spam posts, or remove non-relevant posts.
If you'd like to volunteer as a moderator, leave a comment below letting us know! :)
Meta Post Image: Pale Blue Dot
On February 14, 1990 the Voyager spacecraft took a photograph of the region of space containing the Earth from its vantage point 6 million kilometers away. The famous science communicator Carl Sagan was deeply impressed by the pictures' significance. In Pale Blue Dot, the book based on this photograph he said in part,
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
In 2020, NASA revisited the spacecraft data to create a new image obtained using modern image processing techniques. This image is cropped and less grainy, with radiation from the Sun shining from the bottom of the image. The "mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam" continues to remind us to care for the only world known so far to harbor life.
🔋 How to Support SLRPNK.net 🌱
If you'd like to donate to SLRPNK to help cover Internet, electricity, and domain name costs, you can now send a one-time or reoccurring donation via our F-hub donation site: https://contribute.f-hub.org/ (Note: Your contributions work, but due to an annoying bug they are currently not shown in the summary)
We also offer Librapay as an option for those who already have an account there, which supports reoccurring donations: https://liberapay.com/F-hub.org/
(Note: the Librapay option supports the broader F-hub project, of which SLRPNK is a part of. If you'd like all of your donation to go toward SLRPNK, use the alternative F-hub donation link, and select 'slrpnk.net' in the 'reason' drop-down instead)
Currently f-hub.org is getting a combined 41.35€/month in donations, which is covering a good portion of our recurring expenses, but some recent hardware purchases (~250€) would be still nice to get covered as well. The recent one-time donation of $50 from an anonymous SLRPNK member will help with that, thanks!

⬛ Union Resources 🟥
These are unions from around the world who can train you to become an effective organizer to form a grassroots union with your co-workers!
We seem to have narrowed down the server issue causing the php-fpm process crashing to load-spikes caused by our Movim instance.
It isn't entirely clear though if this is a problem with the development version of it that we run, or maybe the blog part is being targeted by LLM scraper bots.
As a way forward the plan is to finally run Movim in a Podman container, which makes it easier to control the resources used, but since this isn't an officially supported way of running Movim in production, it needs a bit of extra work to get running.
We might also try to put the blog part behind the Anubis AI scraper protection, like we already do for our Lemmy.
We hope to have it back online at the end of the weekend, but it depends on what unforeseen issues come up.
Is it only me, or are the images/thumbnails not working on slrpnk.net for everyone?
I access it from Firefox on Windows.
Libertalia is primarly a myth, that you can find in the 2nd book presumably written by Daniel Defoe in his "History of the most famous pirates". Presumably, because it is not certain that he has written it... It describes a pirates republic, free from tyranny. Some French archeologists have found some traces of an established pirate village in the north of Madagascar. Today if we apply this concept in creepy techno-fascist modern world, it means becoming self sufficient with this oppressive system, using the sea and it infinite possibilities (in a finite world) by becoming self sufficient ourselves on a boat, and joining others Libertalians (opposed as libertarian, that can lead to extrem right wing, whites suppremacists, you name it.) The goal is to build a real non hierarchycal and horizontal structure, that obey not to moral, but shared values. Among them, as non exhaustive list an acceptance of :
The TAZ from Hakim Bey, we can’t destroy what is appearing and disappearing constantly.
Ken Neumayer principles in self sufficient way of living at sea.
Digital anonimity to not compromise yourself and others in the Techno-Fascism 21st century paradigm by not using corporates or compromised digital tools.
Hacking every day objects, using, developping and sharing low techs with the community and potential becomers.
Self food making and cultivating on board.
Navigation techniques.
Good deal regarding boats, sometimes zero money is required to acquire a boat.
Murray Bookchin theories, but you don’t need to accept all of course...
Small is beautiful from E.F Schumacher.
Living in communities that can’t have more than 20000 people in it. If more, build an other one!
Horizontals and non authoritarians decisionnals systems, controlling and disminishing "big mouths" potential power. (Athenian ostracism?..)
Decentralised Money and exchange.
Confronting the oppressives systems by not paricipating in it, except if it it necessary.
Repairing and developping your own parts
Sharing with Libertalian.
Accepting the need of self inner growing by non sectarian ideas.
Confronting libertarianism by libertalia free thinking, that lead to a real freedom, and not an bunch of armed people gluttoning in bunkers...
Proaganda by arts, designs, way of living by example, to help others people that are searching a way to exit the oppressive techno-fascism system.
Any idea that will match this lifestyle and can make it evolve constantly, after all, our thinking should be a TAZ also!
Welcome to sea free freaks community!

~~Was anyone else unable to connect to slrpnk in the last week or so? Was the server down or was it something on my end?~~
Just saw the other post about the server outage so feel the below is relevant:
Is there a way to make slrpnk more resilient by having community members host mirrors of the instance? I also feel this is in line with the ethos of solarpunk where we'd rather have many decentralised instances that can support each other and provide mutual resilience, rather than a single critical instance.
What are people's thoughts?
(I might be able to volunteer my home server for this if I can cover the requirements)
Each month, we create a post to keep you abreast of news and happenings regarding the server, discuss recent events, and to act as town square for the community.
🌟 Community Highlights 🌟
- !immigration@slrpnk.net - Discuss migration, immigration, emigration, deportation, & expatriation, here.
- !community_community@slrpnk.net - learn how we can make communities better - create the ones we would like to see in the world, and improve the ones we happen to be in.
- !foraging@slprnk.net - come together to explore the bountiful wonders of the natural world and share our knowledge of gathering wild goods!
🏚️ A Call for Moderators! 🏡
Every so often, we check the health of our communities to prune inactive or abandoned ones, and to hopefully save active ones where the moderators have become absent. We've found 5 communities in need of new moderators:
- !inperson@slrpnk.net - A community for sharing information about ways to get involved with real world activism to make the world a better place.
- !pleasantpolitics@slrpnk.net - Politics without the jerks.
- !naturalphilosophy@slrpnk.net - A community for anyone interested in big questions and meta-questions pertaining to the natural world.
- !water@slrpnk.net - A space to discuss all about water, water reuse and its waste.
- !publictransport@slrpnk.net - Everything about public transportation!
As a moderator, you'd be in charge if handling user reports on posts or comments within the community, and occasionally checking it ensure there's no spam posted. Most of those communities are very laid back, and won't require much input. Pleasant Politics will likely require a bit more attention due to its subject matter.
If any of those sound appealing to you, and you'd like to help keep them alive, let us know in the comments below! Stepping up to moderate is a great way to help out the instance :)
🔇 Defederation with Lemmy.org 🔕
A Lemmy.ca admin has recently brought to our attention that Lemmy.org is actively being used as a platform for vote manipulation, likely due to their lax sign-up requirements. Unfortunately Lemmy.org's admin has been unresponsive weeks after they were messaged about this issue.
Due to the extra workload this places on admins to effectively prevent or moderate, Lemmy.ca has chosen to defederate from Lemmy.org. We have also chosen to defederate from Lemmy.org, at least until their admin returns and takes effective action against the issues raised.
Lemmy.org is a small instance with only one active community, and it is unlikely this defederation will effect any of our users. You can check to see if you are subscribed to any of their communities via looking at the subscription list in your user profile settings.
🌽 Meta Post Image: The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson 🐾
Published in 2021, the novel The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson tells the story of several generations of Dakota / Sioux women who fight to preserve their way of life against encroachment by colonialism and forced integration. 'Seed Keeper' refers literally to people who sewed seeds into the hems of their garments as they were forcefully displaced from Minnesota so they would still be able to grow their own food.
Diane Wilson is the former Executive Director for Dream of Wild Health, an Indigenous non-profit farm, and the Native American Food Sovereignty Alliance, a national coalition of tribes and organizations working to create sovereign food systems for Native people.

🌍🌐 No borders, no nations! New community rule? 🚧🛑
We have been mulling over introducing a new rule in regards to community creation here on SLRPNK. As a thematic instance we naturally try to keep things a bit on topic although obviously that can be subjective and the boundaries of what is and what isn't on-topic are intentionally somewhat fuzzy.
One theme has cropped up now and then though and that is country specific communities which we feel are a bit out of place on SLRPNK. Not only because they usually focus on country (or region) specific political topics, often in a language that is not commonly spoken by our members, but also because Solarpunk is an international and explicitly migration friendly movement. Of course, a country specific community is not automatically xenophobic, but a certain level of nationalism is almost unavoidable and frankly speaking the very notion of nation states is something we as Solarpunks should strive to overcome.
Or to put it a bit differently: In an ideal Fediverse world you would open a solarpunk community on region specific instance and not open a region specific community on a general solarpunk instance. But we are still a bit away from this...
So what do y'all think about this? Should we restrict the creation of such communities here on SLRPNK and ask existing communities previously created to slowly move elsewhere? We would be of course also happy to give advise how to host a Piedfed or Lemmy instance yourself for a language or region specific instance.

Hi fellow Lemmy administrators.
As we're preparing to open up our own Lemmy instance, we were wondering how you filter which requests go through to Anubis, and which requests go directly to Lemmy.
I don't want to block either API access or ActivityPub access, but I still want end users to pass the Anubis challenge. How have you set up your reverse proxy to do so?
It seems slrpnk.net, anubis, and Safari do not play together too well. After each click while browsing on Safari anubis checks my humanity, and then breaks the layout of the site. This happens on mobile as well as on desktop.

I know Safari users, especially mobile, are going to be a pretty small minority, but there are some things that I cannot do in app currently (mlem) and need the mobile web version.
