[character, ponting at a huge box labeled "IT'S COMMON SENSE"] Interesting, let's open it to see what's really inside

[the character opens the box and looks distraught]

I know this is just thebad.website comic, but I'm genuinely curious (and an idiot) to know what the connection is with generally racist-inclined folk love for saying that everything is common sense. What makes them think in this way?

It's the backbone of their every argument--no matter what it is, if I ask, "Why do you think x, y, or z is the case?"
It is without a doubt their instant reply, 'It's just commonsense!'

Thought-terminating cliché, it’s used to dismiss arguments and shut down critical thinking. It’s a tactic associated with cult language.

Because there isn't a real reason besides idiocy and hate, if they try to rationalize it, it falls apart, they have to face or give away that they're just hateful idiots. Saying it's "common sense" is an easy scapegoat to tidy up the truth, even if it's just for the benefit of their cognitive dissonance.

It's a way to pretend their opinion is reasonable without having to justify it.

in addition to the reasons (rationalizations) other commenters have covered, the reason (casuality) that they reuse this particular phrase so much is because it's commonly used in the media they consume. from limbaugh to rogan it's always been a staple.

They think that way because that's as far as their thoughts go. They do not have a deeper reason. They're just judgemental morons that jump to conclusions to make themselves feel better.

The "common sense" answer is generally broad and vague. It purposefully avoids nuance and reality. "If I want to build a garage on my property, why does the government need to be involved?" That person doesn't think of the drug dealer doing that to cook meth right next door and possibly blow up the block or the idiot that doesn't understand how to build a structure and it collapses in the first stiff wind.

Sheeesh, and ya all wonder why no one listens to the left.

If you know shit about topic, you can only skim the surface. That's common sense. More police = less crime. More military = less risk of being attacked. More goods = smaller prices. That's common sense.

What it doesn't account for is, for example, too much police = more corruption, too much military = expansionist ideas, too many goods = oversaturation and sharp drop in said goods. Because that requires deeper knowledge. Yes, not much deeper, but you need to know these things are in fact factors, and that the problem is more complex than what's seen at a glance.

Edit: Forgot to answer why it's overused by racists etc. If you know black do most crime out of all, it's common sense to want them pacified. If you know drugs are bad and mexicans are known for cartels, it makes sense to not want mexicans which can be smugglers. It all falls apart as soon as you read on it or do anything, but what these people have most of is willful ignorance.
