I was trying to figure this out yesterday, and was wondering what it was for other people.

I remember back in the 90s, my crush one day asked me if I wanted to go see a concert. I was like: yeah! But they didn't mention that they also invited their ex. So not only was it kinda awkward (the ex was far cooler than me) but I don't even remember who the band was, all I remember is they were trying to sound like NIN and not succeeding.

The first alt concert that I really enjoyed was His Name is Alive which I guess is "experimental rock, dream pop"... anyway I remember sitting in the "under 21" section and thinking the music was really good... It was a fairly small venue too, the acoustics were great...
