Wait! I'm not with THEM! There's an unfortunately loud part of the country that is giving the GOP, conservatives, and Americans a bad name. This comm is for the rest of us, the quiet majority. If there is anything worth conserving, it's our values: Respect, Integrity, and Truth.
This comm is for the posting about US politics from a right, but not alt-right, perspective.
Rules:
- Treat each other with respect. Follow lemmy.today instance rules. Follow your instance rules.
- Social media posts must either include a timestamp in the image or be accompanied by a timestamp in the text of the post. Posts with an inaccurate or missing timestamp will be removed. Relative timestamp (e.g. "5 mins ago") will be removed.
- Only use high quality news sources. They all have bias, but quality and truth are a requirement. News articles must have a non-fictitious, non-anonymized byline. Fox is not a high quality news source.
- Don't post memes, but you can comment with them.

I do know a lot of conservatives who looked at how trump is handling the Epstein shit and have admitted they were wrong about him, but I also live in Canada. Dunno what it’s like in burgerland.
Lifelong Burgerland resident here. Conservatives may reach the point that the majority condemn Trump for this one thing, but the bottom line is they'll line up to vote for the next racist rapist felon traitor that comes along. Hell, they'll get onboard with a 3rd term for Trump. Because they're 100% cool with treason if it's their team doing it.
Did you see them speak up when Trump pardoned hundreds of J6 domestic terrorists and allowed them to be released back into our society? They're only mad now because their Daddy blatantly lied directly to their faces and it's undeniable. They're mad because THEY were affected this time.
Edit: OP is deleting my comments, so read it while you can. Lot of snowflakes, despite being summertime.
They believe Jan 6 was overblown and it was “just a bunch of old people touring the White House.”
Which is absolutely ridiculous to claim.
I feel most of the loud MAGA you hear believes a little too strongly in "history is written by the victors" and don't have enough self reflection to realize they can't always be the victors. It's arrogant and disconnected.
Only the comments that break the rules.
Theres an entire spectrum of conservatives, but many of them now consider themselves "independent" or even Democrats at the moment due to the hostile takeover of the Republican party with the slow rolling Southern Strategy.
The vocal MAGA is the loudest segment of conservatism in America right now, and for EVERYONE no matter their political affiliations, it's often easier to see people who disagree with you as a single cohesive entity rather than individuals with nuanced opinions.
Conservatism is a necessary and important part of politics, helping to preserve culture (all culture, but that's a different topic), helping keep and modernize tradition, and forcing progressive elements to carefully and fully bake new policies that benefit everyone. They're the moderator to the progressive catalyst.
The MAGA movement is a radical REGRESSIVE movement towards hyper conservative Authoritarianism, which is of course in the conservative spectrum but isn't consistent with all conservative values.
I'm a firm Democratic Socialist progressive, but I know people who are conservative and have been alienated from MAGA, I also know people who are really more moderate conservatives that have been caught up in MAGA due to the fear and distrust brewed up by the likes of Fox News, Facebook influencers, and worse.
If MAGA people have any chance of coming back to reality we need to better regulate the media, social media, and these people need deprogramming and improved media literacy. Moderate conservatives like the people we find here in this community are a key component and ally in that, and I'm so very tired of having to defend them against attacks from (well meaning) fellow progressives who should be building coalitions with them against this existential threat to us all.
Trump couldn't have won, either time, if only die hard MAGA voted for him. The vast majority of conservatives bit their tongues and voted for that shitstain. You can talk about the whole spectrum of conservatism, but they all fell in line to make it happen. Doesn't look like much of a spectrum from where I'm standing.
Sorry to break it to you, by you've fallen for the lie. Conservatism isn't about preserving "tradition," and never has been. Conservativism has always been about maintaining hierarchy, and only happens to correlate with tradition to the extent that hierarchy has been the status-quo.
Make no mistake: whenever the status-quo is egalitarian, conservatives work to change it as rapidly and radically as possible.
You don't think it's possible for people to not have progressive ideologies, want to preserve tradition and culture, want to keep progress careful, and not just "preserve hierarchy"?
I'm so fucking tired.
Thank you for proving my point I guess?
Those people are called "liberals."
I mean, what do you mean by "liberals"? Centrist Democrats?
Liberalism in political theory just means someone who values personal liberties. Its been co-opted by the same people who have conflated leftism with liberalism and rightism with authoritarianism, ignoring the fact you can have authoritarian leftists (Stalinist Communism) and liberal conservatives (Libertarianism in the American political stage).
Politics isn't left vs right, and it isn't leftist vs liberals. That kind of classification was literally designed to isolate and fracture political factions of progressives.
The political quadrants/compass, which while it has become a bit of a meme online encapsulates the spectrum of political beliefs much more accurately.
The political compass is annoying as fuck. Disinformation to make people think they understand politics but they don’t.
Not trying to argue, but do you have another model that works better? I refer to it because it's commonly known and the quick for people to understand and it captures more nuance than "left vs right".
For instance the Khmer Rouge’s communism is vastly different from say Mao Zedongs, yet on the political compass they would be placed in roughly the same spot. This causes massive issues with understanding of these things for the general masses and creates a social influence that is massively idiotic.
That makes sense, thank you for clarifying.
No problem man. You see where I’m coming from here though right?
Yeah I get you, it's more complex than any simple diagram and there's more than 2 dimensions. Totally agreed!
I think understanding that different countries and different styles of politics work differently depending on implementation and historical/ geographical context, and simplifying things on that level causes more problems than it solves and encourages people to not actually learn about how things work.
We could be able to regulate traditional media, but regulating the flat earther, antivaxer, Christian fundamentalist on social media might prove to be a bit harder.
