I saved up a bunch of shows and waited all year to binge in one month over the summer and cancel.

may I recommend…

✨piracy✨?

[–] Beebabe@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I love your recommendation. Unfortunately I am very out of the loop with that sort of thing these days. And I’m without resources if I accidentally break something. I need my desktop for work as well. I’d be happy to read up on the topic if you could suggest some reputable sources that someone without a tech background could break down. It’s why I save it all up until summer. So I pay them as little as possible.

I have all the skill and info needed to pirate anything I want safely and easily. I still use your method.

#1 stats are recorded and they can see what those of us who only buy one month a year watch. #2 it's easy and $18 a year isn't a bad price for the shows and movies I am interesting IMO. #3 there is a certain joy in binging and cancelling after one month that pirating cannot provide.

PS: I kinda like checking in on the Netflix interface once a year just to see what people are dealing with.

That makes me feel a little better. I know I should do a better job keeping up. By the time I’m done for the day, most of the time my brain is jello. Nice username, btw. I agree it isn’t bad for a short amount of time.

I beleive this is where dbzer0 would come in... So basically, you are going to want a VPN first, which they are pretty easy to get and use and there are plenty of resources online, I would suggest going for a trusted one such as Proton VPN or Nord VPN. Then as for how to actually get movies/shows, you are going to want to install firefox (if you don't have it) and then add the 'ublock' extention to block popups and other nasty things. Then once you have that, you can check out the sites in our megathread, they are safe and trusted: https://rentry.co/megathread-movies-and-tv . Let me know if you need more help. :)

Edit:

Ublock - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

I too am out of the loop but why not use tor? The VPN companies can still trace it back to you if what you did turned out to be illegal.

[–] thebestaquaman@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

I'm not an expert by any means here, but my impression is that it at some point comes down to a tradeoff between security/anonymity and having a fast enough connection. TOR slows you down much more than an ordinary VPN is what I've heard.

[–] bobo1900@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because streaming over tor is 1) painfully slow and 2) a dick move for the whole network that is very important to others.

VPN don't give a crap about people pirating, and governments probably don't as much as people think (I guess that depends heavily on your country), but if you really want to be safe, go for one of the logless vpn, like mullvad or ivpn.

[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

That's fair piracy probably is safer than most people have you believe.

I still wouldn't go for any VPN that clearly logs stuff that can be traced back to me, that would defeat most of the purpose (unless it's one for accessing machines in my home network).

Also if you're downloading it first I don't really see the relevance of speed, just do it the day before.

[–] bobo1900@sopuli.xyz 2 points 17 hours ago

Technically a vpn is a private company while ISPs I guess have less freedom over government request compliance. So a vpn would be slightly better but yes, very little added value if it's one of the mainstream ones like nord or tunnelbear

[–] basiclemmon98@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

That's why I suggested trusted vpn companies. Proton keeps no logs, so they couldn't hand it over if even they wanted to. I also suggested VPN as opposed to TOR because TOR can be fiddly*, and complicated because of that to a non-techy person (which is what this person had said they were). The speeds of TOR are also not good for streaming.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

fidely

I don’t want to be that guy but I suspect you mean “fiddly,” whose spelling derives from “fiddle.”

I only mention it because it took me a bit to figure out what you were saying.

Thx, fixed that now!

sub for a month with a prepaid gift card (so no potential issues cancelling). binge for a week, run out of stuff to watch, the rest of the sub goes unused and wasted. been down that road once every year or two here.
