That's a nether portal, we're talking about an Ether portal. ;)

I played a mod that introduced portals between arbitrary locations, I'm guessing that's what the dad installed.

The Aether mod was a comprehensive addition to the base game that added a plane much like the nether. You made an aether portal with glowstone and water. It was magical - sky islands, lots of unique enemies, dungeons with bosses, new gear. One of the best Minecraft mods for sure.

It replaces the creepers with a weird old guy that says "Shhh!" as he sneaks up behind you and holds a cloth over your mouth
