In 2024, Pete Hegseth said concerns over his Jerusalem cross tattoo and the symbol's ties to extremists caused the District of Columbia National Guard to pull him from a mission to guard the inauguration of President Joe Biden and helped spur him to retire from the military.[21][22] According to fact-checker Snopes: "Two of Hegseth's Christian-based tattoos [the Jerusalem Cross and the Deus valt tattoo] use symbology that has become associated with — but doesn't necessarily indicate adherence to — Christian nationalist views.
