RULES

  1. No bigotry. The Union, or at least the part of the Union WE support, fought AGAINST that shite. We are anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic, anti-transphobic, and in general anti-bigot here, even if not all the lads in Union blue uniforms were.

  2. No Confederate sympathizing. Anti-democratic racist slaver traitors don't deserve shit.

  3. Follow all Lemmy.world rules

While so many things about the man were God awful and deserve to be pointed out, I'd like to touch on just three. Why these three? To demonstrate what self-absorbed asshole he was and the fact that he was willing to hurt so many people for personal gain and to protect his image.

  1. He was obsessed with George Washington and wanted to be just like him, but since he was such a spineless turd-pile, he instead married into the family in hopes that it would make him more popular and make people like/trust him more.
  2. While he wrote notes about being against slavery when he was younger, he wasn't against benefiting from them. Since America was founded by a bunch of fail-sons trying to escape the debts of the old world, many of the "rich" families of that time were essentially bankrupt and using their slave labor as a form of credit. Lee's father was one of these losers, and REL swore he's release his slaves when his father died. But when his father did eventually die, REL assumed all of his debts and wanted to break free of them. So instead of getting a real job or taking any responsibility for anything, he instead worked his slaves harder.
  3. After one his slaves pissed him off while he was already throwing a hissy fit, he sent her to be whipped. He didn't think the slave driver was punishing her enough, so he personally took over and abused her to the point that his own person in charge of punishing slaves was shocked and said that REL went too far. In fact, it supposedly was so egregious and disgusting that it may have been reported in local papers.

If anyone wants to explain to you about how REL wasn't all that bad and was especially kind to his slaves, offer to treat them the same way he treated his own slaves. If he was so kind to them, it shouldn't be all that bad, right? In fact, it should be rather pleasant. Because he was so fucking kind, right?
