Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Wow, how is your cost of living so low?

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 21 points 11 months ago (3 children)

I live in a tiny 75-year-old granny cottage, drive a 17-year-old truck, wear 10-year-old clothes, never eat out, and never travel anywhere.

[–] Beetschnapps@lemmy.world 21 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Have you tried cutting back on avocado toast?

Well then you’re too perfect for this world. [a compliment few will ever deserve]

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

I’ve lived that life and it’s fucking awesome. Congrats at winning. I hope I can join you soon.

[–] getoffthedrugsdude@lemmy.ml 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Chuckling at the downvotes, treatlers mad at your simple living I guess

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

Turning off that feature sure was among the better choices when it comes to my social media use and mental well-being. Knowing Lemmy, it's probably my choice of transportation.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Are you living alone? That’s the only way I can make those numbers add up. I’ve got a similar lifestyle but repairs/food/dependants mean I need a significantly higher income to break even AND save for retirement.

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 0 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

I'd be living even cheaper than this if I was living alone. My average monthly expenses for the past 3 years have been 2989.22€ including retirement investments.

[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

okay. €. Here's the catch. ask the americans what they pay for health insurance and childcare...

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Why do I need to ask that? I know it's expensive.

[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Why do I need to ask that? I know it’s expensive.

Because what you're stating about your budget doesn't take into consideration the social safety you're leveraging that americans have to allocate additional budget for (or risk the consequences).

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

but it's misleading through and through. what's the median household income where you live?

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I don't know why you're looking to argue about it but I'm not interested. I simply stated that where I live 100k a year would take you so much further than it does in the US. Take care now.

[–] stetech@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

No, you didn’t mention “than in the US,” so people assumed you were sharing an American perspective under an article about US states’ cost of living.

Greetings from your southern neighbor!

[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

yup. many people don't understand that while salaries are lower in the EU, your taxes cover actually life-changing governmental services the US doesn't. (i personally know both perspectives)

[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago (1 children)

it took you 5 posts to tell us you're not in the US. it's simply impossible to interpret your takes without context. you'd need twice as much money in the US to have a comparable lifestyle.

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 0 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

I already said I'm from the northern europe. I don't get what your problem is..

[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

My problem?

...and I live in Denmark (or some other country where people don't default on medical debt).

This thread is wild.

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I assumed it would be obvious from my first post that I don't live in the US when I mentioned living comfortably on 35k a year in a thread about needing 100k to be considered middle class in the US. Clearly, it wasn't obvious, so I clarified it in my third reply (not the fifth, as you claimed), four hours before your first message to me. Do you want me to apologize for not anticipating this potential confusion from the start, or what exactly are you after here? How about just saying, "Sorry, I missed your message where you said you live in the EU"?

[–] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

It's all good, your third reply was actually the 14th post on the very bottom of this pile, sorry that we wasted each other's time. Unfortunately there is nothing new about the fact that people living in functioning social democracies surrounded by wealthy neighbors can actually downsize without risking their children's education, or healthcare.

[–] getoffthedrugsdude@lemmy.ml 4 points 11 months ago

Really? I would have guessed jealousy, like a petty "tHeY hAvE iT EaSy" or something else small-minded. Either way, kudos!
