DDT use nearly wiped out the raptor by the 1970s. Now peregrine numbers are collapsing again in many countries and no one is quite sure why (www.theguardian.com)

A friend of mine had one over for a visit on his balcony. peregrine

They are getting quite common in my city. There are several nests.

I see a dead one every year on the side of the road. And then there's the fat one feasting on field mice by my house. I think they have a good population around these parts. (Might be red tailed hawks though.)

Red-tailed hawks are definitely a lot more common than peregrine falcons. I recommend picking up a pair of binoculars and a field guide so you can tell them apart reliably.
