I've been there a few times. It's....okay? Bathrooms are nice and clean, as advertised.
But I don't really see what the big deal is. Just seems like the Walmart of gas stations.
But now that this asshat went and opened his big mouth I have no plans on going there again...ironically, there is one right off I-25 near Fort Collins in Colorado....which has been pretty much blue for years. Somehow, the place is busy as hell and seems to be doing alright.
Conservatives always have to make things so goddamned weird. Has anyone asked this guy what "family friendly" means?
Family friendly means christian and conservative.
People who make a big deal out of it are over the top, but it's pretty good at being a gas station:
If there's one on my route and the timing makes sense, that's where I'll stop.
Yeah. I get all that. Most or all of the (hot) food is not vegetarian or vegan so our options are drastically narrowed, but that's every single gas station, really.
I appreciate it being clean. It seems other chains could just step their bathroom and game up - like say, Love's - and it'd be about the same.
What I really don't get is when people make it a destination and want merch and so on. The signs for Buc'ees (in Fort Collins) start up in Wyoming, IIRC. You'd think it was a place like Wall Drug or something...
To me, the whole thing struck me as a bit goofy as we first pulled off the highway a few years ago. Then I walked in and the store seemed like a combo of Hobby Lobby and Walmart as far as Americana schlock being sold...definitely got a whiff of what they were probably going for. Figured it was kind of coded for conservatives.
I was right.
To a ya'll qaeda Christian, "family friendly" means:
Jesus is watching you masturbate, disapprovingly.
He also wants you to remember its a sin to discuss your wages/salary, and that unionizing is an unforgivable/deadly sin.
... its camp. They don't realize they're doing camp, because they're in a cult, but its camp.
Right, here's Betty Bowers, America's Best Christian.

10 years ago or whatever, you could tell this was obviously satire. Nowadays? Much closer to indistinguishable from shit ya'll qaeda Christians do and say totally earnestly.
I'm not an expert, but doesn't "camp" require at least a minimal amount of self-awareness?
I am also not an expert but my inclination is "no".
You could, having never seen an impressionist painting, come up with an impressionist art piece on your own.
Similarly, you can act and behave in ways that follow rules and patterns you are not consciously aware of.
You can be broadly described as a parody of something, with yourself either not aware of / intending this, or even with you vehemently denying it.
You don't have to be self aware to delve into an oddly specific, intense, and reverant form of nostalgia. You can do that without realizing that that is what you are doing.
Family friendly means paying for the best lawyers for his son to fight child porn charges.
It’s southerners trying to pretend like they have anything special other than highway-side gas stations.
It's exactly this.
The south has a lot of special things. We have specially bad public schools, specially bad public transportation systems, specially bad worker protections, etc.
