Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person or their instance. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on. Keep on-topic

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Yay! Literally yay! Imprison them all. Every single one.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 48 points 1 day ago (3 children)

And don't forget to disband ICE. Preferably roll back all valid functions of DHS to other government departments and close down that too. It was never necessary or even beneficial.

DHS has always been a fascist overreach disband the agency and return the agencies currently under DHS and put them back where they belong, coast guard back to the military, secret service back to Treasury dept and so on

[–] DrSoap@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Maybe put them back on the borders checking bags for smuggled cheese. The primary duty they were trained for. How they went from that to secret police is wild.

[–] BillCheddar@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I'm curious to see how you think the Democrats are going to unilaterally disband ICE when the President would have to sign that law (he won't) and he could really just reorganize another bureaucracy to do the same horrific ICE shit under a different label.

Twenty five upvotes for you and what you've described is literally impossible. Congrats to the whole team.

[–] caffinatedone@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

They can’t get rid of it without being able to pass legislation, but they can decide to not fund it, or just fund border protection activities exclusively. So, when their current funding runs out, new funding has to come from Congress. They can choose to just not.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Money. Remove the funding. Make them run on the smallest budget to where operations are severely hampered or outright abandoned. Pass laws that severely hamper their control and start impeaching federal judges that don’t uphold the law. At least public exposure of the corruption and consistent public lambasting of Republicans that block justice may fire people up.

It’s not perfect, but it would do something to dampen it. It’s not going to be a light switch change. Nothing can be a light switch change. It’s easier to destroy than it is to build/fix.

Pass laws that severely hamper their control

Can't Trump simply veto any such laws?

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

He can, but then it can get kicked back to Congress for another vote that then requires 2/3 of the Senate and House to pass. If Republicans still don’t play ball, Dems can, and should, continue to be veeeeeeeeeery vocal about this is what the people want and once again the Rs are not governing of the people, by the people, or for the people.

[–] BillCheddar@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago

Yes but these people don't feel the need to be restricted by reality.

[–] warbond@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Perhaps impossible unilaterally, but worth bringing up. We've already seen how powerful online conversations can be.

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

He wouldn't anyway, ICE is attached to Palantir and Palantir supports mostly dems

[–] warbond@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And before anyone says "what about the--" the answer is yes, arrest and imprison in accordance with the law, regardless of party affiliation

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

We have to take out the people at the top for the illegal orders, but I do actually think it's just as important to take out the people at the bottom who followed them.

Make following illegal orders a liability and we'll have another layer of protection from this bullshit.

[–] 18107@aussie.zone 9 points 1 day ago

How about we show them how due process works.
List all their crimes, then (if they live long enough to get to the end of the list) they can be imprisoned.

[–] Jim9222@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. Historical precedent, Trump first this happened. It just stopped the extreme bullshit and speed of execution. Pretty much no one got held accountable in any meaningful way

Until the Dems purge the olds Dems, the ones that support the billionaire class. I’m not as hopeful that anything will improve. We’re just back to stalling and nothing changing for the better or worse

[–] kestrel7_7@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yep. If nothing happened after J6, definitely nothing will happen now.

[–] IamSparticles@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Uh... about 1600 people were charged and over 1200 were convicted of crimes related to the Jan 6 insurrection.

Trump pardoned them all on his first day in office. With a Republican-controlled congress that wasn't inclined to do anything to stop him. But saying nothing happened is a ridiculous over-simplification.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 2 points 22 hours ago

Well if they hadn't sat on their asses for four years and charged and convicted Trump, he wouldn't have had a chance to even run for office in 2024. Instead they waited until after he'd already won the Republican nomination just months before the election to bring charges.

They could have also done something with all the Epstein files that they've possessed this entire time, but instead here we are nearly 8 years from Epstein's arrest and they're still being hidden and the only person who's even been prosecuted was the woman who worked for him.
