I find it worrying that there are approximately 200x more people telling others to vote, than there are people telling others to take any other action on top of voting.
All while it's publicly known that the election is being actively rigged, and would change close to nothing even if it wasn't.
So yeah. If you feel safe doing so, absolutely go vote. But also please consider doing literally anything else aside from that. Even the smallest, slightest protests help.
Organized uprisings removed at least a few dozen totalitarian regimes. So far, voting has removed a grand total of 0. Call me a pessimist, but I'm betting it'll stay at 0 for the foreseeable eternity.
Hungry just voted out an authoritarian this year. This documentary is about Serbia and they voted out their dictator too.
Bringing down a dictator
I'll settle for calling you a willing liar. Contrary to all expectation, bloodless VOTING just kicked the very entrenched and very supported Viktor Orban out of Hungary this year. Do you need sources for that assertion, or no?
And stop suggesting it's not physically safe to vote. Most of us have early voting, voting by mail and/or drop box despite efforts to make those unavailable, and troublemakers physically cannot spread out that far and that thin across every local site every day of the next four weeks. If they try, it will be on Election Day: they simply do not have the resources to mount more of an armed offense.
In addition, it is illegal by federal law as well as many states law to police within a certain radius of polling sites, meaning that even if the feds try it via ICE, states can shut that shit down themselves, and likely will because all those phone calls and emails to our reps that people like you say are useless are actually NOT: our leaders are feeling the heat, and they're gonna feel it more. The rest of us are preparing: that shit will not succeed.
So you can just stop with the low key discouragement and fearmongering, right-wing talking point bullshit. It's absolute crap on every level, and you obviously don't live here and have never voted in the US or you'd know how it works and more importantly, which way the wind is blowing on the streets. Even South Carolina is in the mix to flip a Senate seat now, and I can't think of a harder red state. You're flatly wrong on all counts.
TL;DR: Anyone who wants these losers out of office, ignore this fearmongering doomerist shit from people who don't even live here. It's safe to vote -- and too unsafe NOT to vote.
I read that quote and immediately thought of Orban. The “both sides are the same, voting doesn’t matter” types are clueless, incurious people.
To say it was just voting and nothing else would be manipulative. Quite conveniently, you left out the parts about mass protests and EU sanctions.
How many illegal by federal and state law has this administration done in a year and a half? How many states took any meaningful steps to defend their citizens against ICE's unlawful actions?
That's a lot of words that never came out of my mouth. Unless you can quote specific parts of my comment where I discourage people from voting, try to sow fear in voters, or present right-wing points, quit lying.
My message is simple: VOTE.
Vote AND do other stuff.
Sure, I already did "other stuff" by making this post, thanks for commenting and continuing the discussion. I also posted in the Illinois subreddit the first day that people could register to vote by mail.
We are fucked.
I think the message is for the people that can't even bring themselves to vote. Clearly if they aren't voting, they aren't going to do anything involving more effort. So the goal for them is to just get them to fill in some boxes and sign their name.
If this election is truly rigged and we descend further into fascism, then maybe we can work on getting them to go a little further.
