I think this post just ignores a lot of things out there.
The book Jurassic Park was released in 1990, and the film released in 1993. Since then we've had a handful of films and other spin-offs, all within the last 50 years.
The book The Hunger Games was released in 2008, and the film released in 2012. Since then we've had a handful of films and I would bet many more to come.
What about the Pokemon media franchise? Originally released in 1996 and is one of the largest franchises with video games, TV shows, movies and everything else.
If we count tv franchises, Game of Thrones and The Handmaid's Tale are pretty big ones based on pretty recent books
Nah, of those you list I'd say only Pokemon hits the same level.
There are a lot of popular IPs, but at the same level of Star Wars and Marvel?
I'm not even sure if it's still possible. The availability of everything over the internet divided people lot more over what they like.
The same level as Marvel is such a tricky question.
While Marvel comics have been around and popular for way more than 50 years, they've only been popular as comics.
Look at Marvel as a popular IP when Pokemon released, their most successful product is probably the 70s Incredible Hulk TV series. In fact the company was doing so poorly is went through bankruptcy.
Selling the rights of their major properties to Fox and Sony, the late 90s and early 2000s give us Blade, X-Men and our first Spider-Man film. That's when Marvel really starts to pick up.
But of course those really ultimately fizzled out. Sure the Fox X-Men were huge. The Sony Spider-Man was huge (more the Sam Raimi films). But those are similar comparisons to the Jurassic Park and Hunger Games franchises.
But the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Kicked off in 2008 as an idea, but really given the push once Disney aquired Marvel. Push heavily on that for the last 20ish years. Now that's THE Marvel powerhouse we're talking about.
So sure, Marvel has been around for 50+ years, but the level of Marvel that makes it what it is, that's just the last 20 years.
