Rules:
1. Be civil

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.
Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.
5. Only recent news is allowed.
Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.
6. All posts must be news articles.
No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.
7. No duplicate posts.
If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.
All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

The problem with this argument was their short-sighted business model. They sold digital games for the same price as physical games.
If consumers are accustom to "owning" physical games, and then pay the same price for digital, of course they would assume they own those as well.
If instead you needed to buy a subscription to each game that came out, and they only charged $10/month for the latest AAA game, the "you don't own it" argument would actually be reasonable.
The price point was the stupidest decision too. Because back in, what, the early 2000s I fucking hated the fact that a digital book was the same price or more expensive than the physical book. People kept saying, "Books are super cheap and you're paying for the author and publishing, etc."
No, I'm not. I'm paying for the right to have a book. Once the book is in my hands, I can do whatever the fuck I want with it. If I decide to cut the words out to then put together my own smut, then the publisher can lick my taint.
I do not have the same right to resell a digital book. It better cost me LESS as a result and not give me the bullshit that "I'm paying for publishing..."
I've made the argument that what you're really paying for is a license for the material which is understandable, even in physical form. But no publisher can remove my right to resell the book. Today, publishers can fully yank your "license" to your digital media for any reason or no reason AND FUCKING KEEP YOUR MONEY!
The reason we have this problem is because Congress sucks the cocks of Amazon and other publishers and refuses to regulate the business.
So feel free to pirate because at least you know what you're getting.
I am kind of surprised people thought they owned the game at all. ~~I agree with Sony on this one, ~~people are stupid. (I guess I actually disagree from that title, people ARE stupid enough to believe they own they game).
They own a box. They own a disc. They have some art in their possession, but they don't own the game and its obvious they will only get to play it if Sony lets them as they own/control the hardware.
The disc only was a way to copy the files to the machine, just like the internet so I fail to really see a difference.
Its nice to see the downvotes. I never liked reddit for that, but at least in this instance it affirms my postion. Most people are stupid. Most people are downvoting me. Everything is aligned in the universe.
Think about what I wrote, Sony owns that machine. Your fun little piece of plastic means nothing.
I think for modern machines they easily could put out a software update and brick your discs, I definitely agree with that, but it has the data still on the disc, you own that and I'm sure some tech wizards could extract that and emulate it somehow.
As for older machines that don't even connect to the internet, your comment is blatantly wrong. So I think there's a bit of multifaceted issues being discussed.
You dont own the data on the discs. It has been very clear that is not the case. Much like you don't own the story even if you own a book.
Older machines are not whats being talked about or sold now days. That was a long time ago. Ps2 started the online digital market for Sony.
Sony sold ps3 with the ability to run Linux and you got the discs. Became useless in fairly short order when they updated the machine.
Newer games are released that force upgrades of the hardware software and can break the older discs requiring that software to be updated.
When you say some trickery to hack or emulate the disk, why bother caring that you have a disc at all? You have the game on the hard drive and if that's the plan you don't need the plastic anyways.
