Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules

  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.

  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.

  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.

  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!

  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/

  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.

  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ­, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]

  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.

There's over a thousand ways to prepare a pizza. You don't need the same thing on all of them.

I agree, but passata usually just has basil as part of it so it becomes kind of a given for pizza.

We're talking about the US where everything is bland by default.

It's like asking why you would eat wheat without the bran. For some unknown, godforsaken reason, they remove it here before it makes it to the shelves, and if you want the stuff with the bran intact then it'll cost extra because that apparently makes it "artisan" or some shit.

And a significant portion of the population here looks at everything beyond the bland defaults as snobby excess. "Why are you eating a cheese I can't pronounce? Are you a commie or some'n?"

There's one thing I would describe food in the US as it's not bland. We show up together more different cultures foods than anywhere else on the planet... If anything, our food is a horrible abomination of overly seasoned monstrosities.

I legitimately can't think of a single place in America where what you're saying is remotely true outside of maybe like North Dakota...

Like America still holds the record for most cheese consumed per capita. Hell America's third, in the most types of cheeses consumed and produced only behind France and Italy. When it comes to cheese, America does not f*** around.

Hell this entire section's America wear insulting someone's cheese can get you a shot. We give France a run for their money when it comes to cheese snobbery. You have to be incredibly ignorant to think America doesn't care about cheese.

The only real thing that America struggles with is heat. We love spices. We love peppers. We love flavors and herbs. But just pure raw heat for heat's sake is sort of Hit or Miss.

But at the same time we also consume more hot sauce than anyone else in the world. So figure that one out.

Except that at least half the country only eats that plasticky "american cheese" because they think anything else isn't patriotic.

All that other stuff: hot sauce, chips, etc., it's all just overly-processed, mass-produced, artificially-flavored crap that tries to overcompensate for the blandness of everything else that's a staple of "american" cuisine.

In other countries they actually blend spices and herbs and chilis and they use good ratios to make complex and harmonious flavors. That's not the same thing at all as putting ranch on your chicken nuggets.

And yes, I know there are immigrant communities with ethnic cuisine. But those are indicative of the cuisines of their homeland. America cannot take credit for that. Especially because there's at least a third of the country who won't eat it because they think it's too "foreign."

So providing counterexamples doesn't refute my statement because it wasn't absolute. I didn't say "all americans are like this" or that "you can't find flavorful food anywhere in america."

But the fact remains that a significant portion of the american population does avoid anything beyond white bread, american cheese, and all the most basic stuff they consider "american" or "normal" foods.

If you've never had the displeasure of knowing someone like that, good for you. You might live in a vibrant and progressive area. I haven't been so fortunate, and all my life I've been judged for enjoying fancy cheeses, herbs and spices, various types of cuisines from cultures around the world, etc. So don't tell me my experience isn't real.
