It is a pity, no one here is actually explaining what is so terrible about my comment above.
The Wehrmacht was not some innocent organisation, it was the army of the Nazi regime, a draft army, inherited by the state that the Nazis took over and transformed into the army of their genocidal imperialist regime, as such it was of course also a pillar of their regime. For Americans to maybe get an understanding, the right question to ask in this regard is not what you would think about members of ICE but what you think about members of the US army that were drafted into the Vietnam war, with their units involved in war crimes. That is a poor comparison as the Wehrmacht did way more horrible things on a much bigger scale but it is a less flawed comparison than thinking about ICE, which really is not an army but a SA like mob with only voluntary members.
I am nowhere defending that Oberacker. He sure sounds like someone who would have loved to be in the shoes of his grandfather and that is something only a Nazi would think.
too many acronyms all up and down the thread. not your fault my brain is numb. South Africa? Sturm...Arb...needentolernenmasdeustchen?
Sturmabteilung. Hey, its shorter than many English words, and given that it translates to "storm department", "ice" sounds rather fitting.
I knew it wasn't Sturmwaffe, although that would have been a cool name, the stormwaffles, i just remember they had a seeming obsession with the word storm. i get it, some words and phrases are cool. they roll off the tongue nicely. like cellar door. velvet elvis. nazi pulp.
It is a cool sounding propaganda term, they certainly did know their propaganda stuff. I honestly don't know how that "storm" naming came to be but in German you you have the word "stürmen", which does translate quite directly if I am not mistaken, as in "storming Congress". I heard Maga knows a thing or two about it.
Now that I think of it I am not sure they were named after a storm. "stürmen" means moving rapidly into something and "erstürmen" means conquering/taking hold of something. "Sturm" is merely the noun for that. The weather phenomenon is rather named after that, than the other way round.
There is also the cultural epoque of "Sturm und Drang" btw (which had nothing to do with Nazis and predates them, emphasizing emotion over rationality in art in the late 18th century), which is also not about storms but about pressing forward. Maybe taking hold of something.
