This is frightening correct, if you ain’t got a piece get one, a shotgun is probably best for most.
The one thing that give me hope is how big and dispersed the US is overall. There’s no physical way for the government or really any entity to quell uprisings or enforce “right think” there just ain’t enough manpower even if you bring in all law enforcement down to the municipal level. My suspicion is they believe they can use “AI” and drone surveillance to fill that big gap.
It’s a gamble on their part which reeks of desperation, but it might work. It may come down to whether or not Palantir is actually competent and no one does anything direct to stop them in time(this does include a general strike not just a Luigi)
And know how to use it. You don't have time to fumble.
Who are you planning on shooting?
The police? Your neighbors? The Army?

It ain't about surviving.
If it gets to the point where left wing people are genuinely being rounded up, and there are no other options left, then being armed at worst lets us make the round up more costly in a last stand, or hopefully if there has been enough community building beforehand, helps us more effectively prevent a round up from occurring..
It would also help for a French resistance or Irish Troubles style long-term push-back.
I don't know that they're going to worry about rounding people up. It's enough for most people to make them too scared to think. Drone strike a protest on American soil and that'll break the will of a lot of people. Of course, it will also embolden resistance, but then that's exactly what he wants. If he can get the most serious resistors to huddle up where he can take them out with tactical units and scare the rest into hiding, he wins.
There is no "he", its a "them."
And FWIW, Trump is not even part of them. He is just a loud stooge distraction.
People keep falling into the trap of thinking he's the one doing any of this. He just wants money and fucking trophies. Yarvin and Thiel are taking advantage of the bullshit machine to built their techno feudal wet dream.

Just an outside observer, but it seems they've been already rounding people up and the armed ones were shot and then blamed for having guns on them.

This is a really unusual position to take.
As a husband and father the idea of committing suicide-by-ICE on ideological grounds is an absurd proposition.
Obviously there will always be more opportunities to secure better outcomes for the people I care about if I'm not dead.
Nah, it isn't.
When the options are a) possible suicide by ICE or b) freely allowing your wife and/or daughter to be whisked away to Little St James never to be seen alive again, I'm taking option A 11 out of 10 times. No one is taking my family away to some blacksite unless they do it over my literal corpse. You'll have to kill me first. End of story.
If you don't agree, go ahead and get a divorce and move out right now because you don't deserve that family.

This only happens in movies. You seem to be imagining some kind of apocalyptic leftist purge.
At the moment your family is "detained" you quite simply do not know what the outcome is going to be. Are they just going to be interviewed, and released in an hour, or are they never going to be seen alive again. A violent confrontation, no matter the outcome, dramatically increases the likelihood of the latter.
Sometimes caring for people means considering their well-being before your own ego.

When the government sends the military to round up ~~die juden~~ the commies they dream of standing their ground with the gun they bought last week against a team of well equipped motivated professionals. Only to die heroically and have their family raped and killed in retribution anyway.

No it isn't. The core of his argument is that fascism is here and it will not be stopped without violence. Historically speaking, he's right. Arming yourself in anticipation of an inevitable conflict that will come for you (unless you're the ~~white~~right kind of people) is only prudent.
