๐ŸŒŸ Community Highlights ๐ŸŒŸ

  • !spoonbreadtube@slrpnk.net - A community for sharing videos about labor issues centered on Appalachia, but almost anything that can be connected to the region is welcome (the creator is posting a great documentary that they've been excited to share, so be sure to check it out!)
  • !solarpunktravel@slrpnk.net - Community for those focused on sustainable travel.
  • !disasterresponse@slrpnk.net - Disaster response, community prepping, mutual aidโ€ฆ everything that can help to weather the ongoing and coming disasters (perhaps especially helpful for those experiencing a heatwave)

๐ŸŒ† A quiet month ๐Ÿ˜Œ

Overall, June was a fairly quiet month for the instance. We did tweak the taglines mentioned in the last meta to rotate between different highlights, as all of it at once was looking a bit cluttered if viewed from a mobile browser. But otherwise, things have mostly been purring along.

For the graph enthusiasts among us (I know you're here >_>), let's take a quick look at the instance's stats.

According to our fediverse.observer page, we're continuing to see a steady flow of new users signing up, now totaling 2,369, and our Monthly Active Users (MAU) are hovering at around ยฑ 380 users, which has been pretty consistent for a little over a year now.

๐Ÿ“ธ Meta Post Image ๐ŸŽž๏ธ

This month's artwork is Library Truck by Jacob Coffin (CC BY-ND 4.0), who is also a member here!

It depicts how a library economy might collect unwanted or unused furniture and appliances to be brought to a local warehouse and assessed and repaired, so that it can then be repurposed and given out to people in the community who need it. There's a more detailed write-up by Jacob Coffin in the link above, for those interested. :)

It's another image from the awesome Story Seed Library, which incidentally just concluded their their 2026 Disaster Preparedness, Response and Relief Art Collab, and we're excited to see the submissions from it! :D

Hey, has anyone set up a queer slrpnk community yet? And if not, how would I go about doing that? I'm really surprised I haven't been able to find one since queer culture and solarpunk values seem extremely intertwined. Same question for a disability slrpnk community!

In other news - for my personal solarpunk journey, I've been peakbusting with a recent heatwave in my area and I've convinced a lot of friends locally to do it as well! It's kind of fun honestly. We've been going to a local pool, hanging out, doing non-tech activities, etc. I'm well suited to warm weather anyway, but my dog gets pretty overheated, so I've been making him a bunch of delicious freezer treats which seems to cool him off a lot, and dabbing him with a wet washcloth when he needs it.

My balcony garden is thriving. I really need to make a post to share with the balcony garden community - it was the folks there who helped me get started and gave me ideas on how to handle the water situation. I almost never have to fetch water from the kitchen now thanks to the buckets I put out on the roof when it rains, as suggested by other users!

Aaaand to wrap things up, I'm working on a lot of sewing and clothing related projects recently. A couple t-shirts I haven't been wearing are getting upcycled and Frankensteined together into a cute crop top and shorts set which I'm really excited about, and I got some textile medium and stamps to try decorating some of my other DIY outfits with paint :D I also have a plan to turn a pretty floral sheet I got from the thrift store into a cute pair of tiered palazzo pants. Will be sharing in the DIY area soon!!

Sounds awesome ๐Ÿ‘

I think the reason we don't have a queer community is that there are decent Lemmy / Fediverse instances specifically catering to queer folks, and you can easily interact with those from here.

As for a disability focussed community, what would you have in mind? The topic came up from time to time during discussions around Solarpunk here (mostly with the false framing that this or that life saving medication would not be available), but I am not sure what a dedicated community would add.

That makes sense! Regarding a disability focused community, I'd love to talk about how disabled folks fit into a solarpunk utopia! I'm thinking about how public transport is frequently necessary for folks with disabilities and also benefits everyone else, the idea of a car-free society (like I love the idea of going bikes-only but I cannot safely ride one), making solarpunk hobbies like DIY, gardening, tech hobbies, etc more accessible for different needs, things like learning ASL together to be more inclusive of Deaf communities or improving access to/DIYing Braille-typing devices (which are currently insanely expensive to buy), etc. I'm sure others will have more ideas too. I think it also just feels weird to me that being inclusive of disability is a part of solarpunk but we don't have a place for people with disabilities to discuss what that means. Thoughts?

I would rather you try to bring up disability and accessibility topics in the relevant thematic communities directly; after all inclusion is important and even people not subscribed to a specific disability community should get exposed to these topics.

But of course if there is in the future a lot of discussions going on about disability topics and people want their own space with peers, then a dedicated community would also work.

Edit: I think there used to be a dedicated Lemmy instance for and by blind people. I wonder what happened to it ๐Ÿค”

I think you make a great point. Rather than separating us into our own corner, we should be actively participating in the community at large. Thanks!!

These topics sound great! I'm not currently disabled but I'd be very interested in getting perspective on some of this stuff!

I write and make solarpunk art and I aim to include accessibility related changes in the setting wherever I can but I'm sure I've missed some opportunities
