MODERATORS

Reddit banned me for some political commentary in their BS way, and it looks like it's going to stick this time. Hello, I am u/TheStaffmaster and have been a contributing member of r/minecraft and r/hermitcraft for YEARS. In fact almost all of my karma came from r/minecraft! Not being able to post there is going to sting, but hopefully I'll at least be able to show off my builds.

Welcome to lemmy! Bit of a correction. This isn't a Minecraft instance. It's a Minecraft community.

Think of communities like subreddits.

Instances don't have a reddit equivilant. Think of it like a server. So if you start a lemmy server, lets call it StaffMaster.Social

You could make your own Minecraft community on your own instance.

Minecraft@StaffMaster.Social

And that won't in anyway affect this community, which is Minecraft@Lemmy.World

But users from this community could still post on your instance. And even if you were hosted on your instance, you could still post here and subscribe to all other instances communities (assuming they're not defederated).

Whats defederated? Ok, imagine every instance sending a line out and connecting with all other instances. Defederating would be like one side cutting that line. When that happens, all users hosted on that instance cannot interact with the defederated instance. However if you got a different account on a different instance that is federated, you can interact again.

The fediverse is confusing at first. But once you get your bearings it eventually makes sense.

Edit: One thing I just realized. I'm not suggesting that you SHOULD make your own instance just to make a minecraft community. In my opinion the fediverse just doesn't have the raw userbase numbers to support multiple communities on most subjects.

I'm just saying that you CAN do that. I'm just explaining how the fediverse works.

That being said, please don't create another instance for the sole purpose of making a duplicate community. You'll either split the userbase, or your version will just never thrive.

See, the whole purpose of that feature is so that if the mods of this community have some controversy, you can create a duplicate community, and the userbase would have a place to have their community without the old controversal mods.

That being said, there is no controversy. So if you create a duplicate community now, the userbase has no reason to flee an established and respected community.

So you feel free to enjoy this community, but I just wanted to explain the why of things.

Very good explanation ๐Ÿ‘
